Lots of great advice on these forums! Hi everyone, I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who has so patiently read and responded to all my new yorkie mommy questions. I took Sunni for a group puppy training class, and I can't even be modest, lol…she was way ahead of all the other pups. She is also the only toy dog in the gang. I've learned so much from all the experienced members giving advice and guidance, that I'm actually not doing so bad with training her myself:) So to all of you who take the time to patiently explain to newcomers, probably for the 100th time, THANK YOU!!! You have made this whole experience even more fun for me, because I can share it with others who love their little ones as much as I love my lil gal!!:aimeeyork So thanks from Miss Sunni and her mama, Fiona |
Congratulations little Miss Sunni, and you too mom, a proud day for you. |
Well done, Miss Sunni & Fiona! Keep on working together. I'm like you, have learned so much here and it's made me a much more responsible dog mom, owe so many lots of thank you's, too. |
Well Matese and Jilly, you are two of the ones who have given some of the best advice and tips. Thank you:) |
awww, aren't you sweet. How is little Miss Sunni's sprained leg doing. |
Oh she's perfectly fine Matese. Again, after reading all the forums I may be a tad paranoid about some things. She did do something to her front leg but she didn't have any swelling, or even wince etc when examined by the vet. The vet gave an anti-inflammatory, which seemed to work pretty quickly. It is almost impossible to squelch the energy in Sunni. She's a feisty little wench I'm happy to say. |
What a lovely message - thank you for taking the time to post it :)! So glad to hear your baby did so well at class! |
lol, oh yeah, yorkies are so hard to try to keep them calm. Cannot be anyone one more paranoid then me when it comes to my pups. At first sign they are not acting normal, I keep my eye on them an hour or so, if I see no improvement, off to the vet we go. Better safe then sorry. So happy Sunni has made a full recovery, for such a young baby she has gone through to much. Sunni is blessed to have you as her mom, I never cared how zoomie crazy my girls were, that showed me they were healthy and happy that's all that ever mattered to me. Keep up your good work training and working with little Miss Sunni. How is the nipping your son working out, these lil pups are such little rascals, little clowns, they don't realize their play can be hurtful. When I had my wee lil crazy puppies, I called it humanizing them lol. But I LOVE wild crazy babies, so entertaining, cute, funny, so hard for me to correct them, they were just so cute and funny. My situation was diff. it was just me and them, they grew out of the attacking of my feet and me dragging them when they latched onto my pants lol.Good luck with that training. |
We are making quite a lot of progress with the nipping. She seems to be in a real learning mode now that she's feeling so well. She knows to stop what she's doing when I say no and leave it.:) I've been working with my son and see that part of the problem is Sunni is crazy about him and just wants some attention, but he's anxious/nervous with her..might be my fault for saying to be very very careful with her. I've gotten on the floor and held Sunni and Matt sits in front of us and pets her head. When I let her go she goes into his lap and curls up. My son loves that. So he's now getting used to holding her, and she's getting his attention. When he gets up to walk, he's learned to stop walking and say no biting. Its not perfect but he's good about being consistent with her. I have total faith in both of them to work this out, lol. |
Glad you are making some progress, Sunni is just a little baby, like most yorkies seeing how much they can get away with lol. They are smart little critters, she is young and can learn quickly. Cody just turned 4 y/o, I am amazed at how fast he learns new commands, he is very, very food motivated and this helps, he also LOVES to please. Good that your son is being firm with command words, this will end soon as long as the commands remain consistent. |
Thanks, Fiona, that's so kind of you to say. Dogs are so much fun to train, I can't help but pass along things I've learned or read or heard from somebody else about how to motivate and keep going with them when they seem to be resisting. With terriers, they were bred for independent, thinking- and focusing-ability so they can complete their ratting tasks w/out humans around to direct them complete their job. They are mostly on their own when ratting from start to finish. Some think it's a stubborn streak but I've always thought it's just the terrier making sure he really needs to do what we're asking vs. what he instinctively thinks is right, not pigheadedness. Once you can motivate and convince a terrier doing things your way gives them their best life, they quickly get on board with you and rethink you only occasionally. ;) |
