Questions about bringing puppy home Hi there, I will be bring my first yorkie home in about 5 weeks (he will be 11 weeks by then). I was wondering if it's okay for him to socialize with my dog at home. His vaccinations are up to date. The puppy will have his first set of vaccinations when I bring him home. I am really scared of parvo and don't want to risk anything. Thank you |

First set of vaccinations?? First in the series?? He is NOT protected from parvo until he has at least 2 sets of the vaccine in him.....I personally would NOT be letting him around any other dogs or out in public until he has completed his puppy shots....this is a series of three or four shots, depending on the "brand" used. Parvo is vicious and a killer and there is NO reason to risk it! Good for you that you are being so cautious! You usually get the first in the series at 8-9 weeks, the second in the series at 11-12 weeks, and the last in the series at 14-15 weeks old. I do not let my new owners come see their babies or handle them until they have that second in the series on board for a week. (I have had first hand experience with people bringing parvo in on their clothes/shoes/hands, contaminating unvaccinated babies, almost killed a large litter of my innocent babies.....I would not wish parvo on my worst enemy! |
I would think socializing in your home with your vaccinated dog would be fine. At 11 weeks I would expect him to already have at least 2 vaccinations. Just monitor them at all times and separate when you are not watching until you are positive everyone gets along. Not too long ago someone posted about bringing in a small rescue dog that killed her tiny dog with one shake when she ran to answer a phone. I would not take him for walks and I guess theoretically if you walk your other dog he could bring in parvo so I would hold off on that. Also, stay away from petsmart and those places so you don't introduce parvo into his envronment on your shoes. |
Thank you everyone for the responses. I will double check with the breeder and possibly have him stay with his mother until his shots are complete. |
