How much should I baby him.
 

Took Wolfie to the vet on March 27, his 6mo. birthday. He is 9.2 lbs. A big boy. He became a eunuch that day. Its driving me crazy. I cannot get him to take it easy. He is jumping higher, further from the ottoman to my chair (I moved it to try and keep him from jumping so much). And he's zooming around like there's no tomorrow. I keep checking him and his sutures. He seems to be just fine. I guess if he hurts himself I will be able to tell. He also seems to be healing pretty fast. The nurse said to keep the collar on for 7 days. but it looks like it could come off with no problem. The only thing is, if I take it off, I could probably never get it back on him.


Any one with similar experience. What did you do?

Hi. I literally just went thru this, but with a younger puppy and it was medically necessary. The Vet told me we had to keep the collar on her for 10 -14 days!! I questioned it at the office when I picked her up and they said…yes those are specific discharge instructions for Sunni. She's a very active puppy and after the first day it was super hard to keep her quiet. I had gotten one of those blow up donuts which was better for her then the cone, which blocks their vision. But she did chew on it and kept deflating it..but, it was still enough of a barrier to keep her from licking her stitches. She had 7 stitches for her surgery, so I thought maybe thats why it was longer. I had mentioned it on the forum here and people suggested taking it off while she was quiet and sitting with me..so I did. Really by the 5th day, the wound was completely healed and the stitches dissolved, so the issue wasn't really her licking or biting the area, but her jumping and playing. So, I ended taking it off after a week, lol. I did hear (see) some other great ideas on here. The best one which I will use if its ever necessary again is to get a onsie and put it on backwards, and leave the middle snaps open. I'm not sure how that works but I'd try it for sure. Good luck! I had Duncan neutered two months ago, when he was four months old. He had dissolvable stitches. The vet didn't send him home with a collar or even suggested putting one on him. He just told me to TRY to keep him as quiet as possible (with a yorkie is that possible?) The first night and the second day he was pretty quiet, but after that, it was back to normal. I did my best to keep him from jumping off the sofa and zooming around the dining room table. Duncan didn't try to bother his stitches at all.

I would think if Wolfie had his surgery 5 days ago that his stitches should be pretty well healed on the outside. Are you able to look at them and tell if they are dissolving or if they are healing?

It's only 4 days since he had his surgery, as hard as it can be, you really should not have him jumping off things, if you have a crate I would crate him for a while or give him limited space for a few days. Lift him on and off beds and sofa's. He has to heal inside as well as outside.

When Dinky was neutered, the vet gave us a collar in a sealed package. He said to use it if we needed to, and if did not need it and returned it in the sealed package, we would not be charged for it.
I've read others on the forum say that they use preemie onesies if your dog tries to get into the stitches.
Dinky recovered very quickly, but we still did not let him jump up or down.

My response is about the babying. I have babied mine all their life they are 10 and still they are well adjusted dogs they just know if they are going through a difficult time they are not going to go through it alone thats on things as simple as anxiety over fireworks. For that I have their devotion and loyalty. I dont think you can baby a dog too much if they need to know someones there for them too
