Do It Yourself: Grooming
 
I see that there are a lot of folks out there (including myself) who groom their yorkies. I thought I would start a thread that could help others who would like to try. :p

Let's post tips and hints about grooming here for a one-stop reference.

I DO - the Simplist Top Knot help site I've seen on the net - http://www.yorkies4me.com/topknots.htm

PICTURES step you thru doing a nice bow - I eliminate the Double Bands but it shows CLOSE UP how to do a perfect Bow in 8 simple steps all on ONE page.

Oh yeah! That is great if you are Bewitched. I saw how that first band magically appeared between the second and third picture.

I will get my stuffed yorkie and see if I can perfect this! :D

Wow, the site is wonderful . . . I guess I will visit this again in a year when my Tiger has grown enough hair to put up :rolleyes:

:D :D :D :D :Love you too :D As you can see ...I hardly cut my girls - I do trim under their feet and shape them - and their ears...little butt area ....and keep the hair out of their eyes. The rest is just a matter of trimming up any hair that starts looking straggly.

Many people will not cut that hair (under eyes) ...but mine love to spy on the neighbors and need good clear vision to peek thru the fence on their Spy Missions....so I DO trim between their eyes.

here's a tip for top knots...spray a little leave in conditoner in (just enough to dampen it a bit) and comb through before putting the band in.

I am new to this list, I have a question for you, your Yorkie's are beautiful, I am having trouble with dry skin, the hair looks shinny but itchy and flaking, I am feeding her Royal Canin for Yorkies, and some wet food, Pedigree. Could you lend any information.

LOL! And that's the best tip of all!!! I keep Gabby in a puppy cut as I just don't have the time to brush her each day that she would definitely require. This makes it easier on both of us:)

When my oldest Chanel was playing in the water every day last summer she got dry skin ...I got some Veternarians BEST Moisture Mist SKIN Conditioner and it really helped....about $8.00 - sold in Petco

ALSO...For Tangles & knots/mats in their hair - JOHNSONS NO MORE TANGLES works (for Kids) fantastic to get out knots or matts. Approx. $5.00 sold in all stores that sell Baby Products

I love puppy cuts but haven't seen one I like for a silky coat. seems like the dogs that look the best have thick, more course hair. would love people to post cut idea photos on this thread too.

here's a picture of Gabby. She's a little "shabby" looking as she's due to go back to groomers to get "cleaned" up with the cut. Her hair is really thick so this just makes it easier on the both of us!

I think you're right about the Puppy Cuts on a yorkie with thicker hair - little Eddie (AlaskaDad's) yorkie has a Darling puppy cut.....I had Chanel in one when she was little but they took TOO much off her body - the face was cuter than anything though...
I'll try to keep an eye out for Silky hair in a puppy cut because you don't see it too often....

MAGNOLIA .....GABBY is a SWEETHEART ! Seeing that makes me want to cut Chanel's hair...Cheri is silky and very easy but thick long hair is hard to keep up with

PIC Below is Chanels Puppy Cut...she had real long hair before that cut....

Anytime !! I love grooming threads and since I've been to 5 groomers and now do it myself I feel I can post somewhat informative now ! Finding a good groomer is hard and most all of us can do the basics ourselves if we have the right tools.

I normally use a groomer but decided to do it myself last time. I have to say that it turned out pretty well.

My tip would be thinning scizzors. They are a great help!

LOL !! No - didn't watch videos - just picked them up one day after spending 75 BUCKS and then had to take Chanel back the next day cause the groomer didn't TOUCH her little hiney - and I thought - I CAN DO THIS -

For what some groomers charge... and how little they actually have to do - the basics are easy to do IF you take your time and cut just little bits at a time. PLUS - you don't have to leave them and put them thru that stress...

Both girls now love having me do their ears, faces and butts...but the feet are a different story. What is it about Yorkies and their FEET ? :D

They help with topknots, grooming products, wrapping etc... I just ordered the sweety blue grooming video also. I am hoping it helps me alot I really want to learn how to wrap. :thumbup:
