Can someone help? My Girl yorkie just gave birth Hi I'm hoping someone has the answer to my question. This is my first post and I need your help :) My Girl Yorkie has just had 2 boy puppy's, they are gorgeous one is name Bentley the other is named Lambo. Lambo is half the size as Bentley about the size of a visa card. His back legs - foot part is facing opposite way, like it should be shaped as an L but his foot is shaped like an I no bend the foot part. I'm wondering is it deformed or will it shape up as weeks progress, I'm a little worried :( |
I don't know anything about newborn puppies and hope someone with knowledge will offer you help here. |

Gosh, I'd think I'd want a vet's opinion on this asap. Have they seen a vet yet? Do you have a vet who has a mobile unit? I would be very, very careful/vigilant w/ this particular puppy bc sometimes when there is a visible deformity, there is actually even more going on that may not yet be fully visible yet, unfortunately. What about your breeding mentor, do you have one to consult? |
It's 3am in Australia. Sure hope the little male will be ok. May be something easily remedied if taken to the vet promptly when they open. Hope she will update as she can. |
I would go to the vet in the AM. Hopefully he's okay. |
I agree with others, a vet must see this puppy ASAP. If anything can be done for that leg it must be done now. Please keep us up-dated. |
No it is not normal - and I would have the vet examine ASAP. Also the article on Swimmers Puppies is a good read. But you do really want to know what you are dealing with. Good luck and let us know what the vet says |
Post a pic please Please posts pics and the vet's diagnosis and suggestions for treatment so we can all learn something. Many times with an obvious visual birth defect there are other things wrong internally. A lot of times there is nothing you can do to make the foot normal, but the good news is that dogs do fine with three legs. I have to agree with the others that if anything can be done it needs to be done quickly. |
I always have my babies and mommas seen by our vet within 48 hours of whelping. I do not know if you have done a well baby check yet, but this is something you need to do......this issue does happen occasionally, from positioning in utero, you can get a leg or foot that will absolutely terrify you when they are born, but after birth, as the baby is out and moving around, stretching legs/feet, things will straighten out and it will be fine. Those tiny bones are like rubber and they can/will "get right" following birth. I have had that happen to me twice, litters were average size, and I was devastated with what I thought was going to be a deformed leg....my mentor calmed me and told me what I am telling you....chances are, it will straighten out with no residual problems or issues...it is probably positional. |
