milk bones and green dentasticks? ok so big q. do people use those green 'dog tooth brush chew stick treats' for cleaning yorkie teeth between brushes? i found some smaller ones, but they seem awfully hard for a dog with such tiny teeth :/ also with two recalls and a giant chocking hazard warning on the front im really starting to wonder if they are actually safe :/ also are regular sized milk bones ok to give to a yorkie? i can't find any smaller ones but i don't know if they would be too big or too hard for a tiny puppy. |
If your talking about greenies I don't really trust them. Honestly a lot of people here dislike milk bones but my dog loved them and I would give a small chewy one to her every night for her go to bed treat. She liked to get the huge ones and carry them around for days lol. |
The ingredients of Milk Bones are not good. The dental ones have chicken by-products and artificial coloring, among other things I would rather not have my dog eat. Their regular product has "meat and bone meal" but from what animal? They must not know otherwise they would have stated it. Yuck! |
I'm not opposed to milk bones just not a fan of greenies. Greenies look plastic to me so I try to avoid things that look like plastic. |

Greenies had such a bad rap because dogs couldn't digest them. They changes the formula but I still don't give to my dogs. They are sticky and can choke easily. Milk bones imo are just extra calories I would rather not give. But JMO http://www.1800petmeds.com/images/pr...able-study.pdf |
greenies are not safe and the new milk bones for teeth brushing, dogs have had problems with. Chester does the cod skins and they are safe |
I haven't had issues with greenies except one dog may have a little GI issue from them. |
Jackson won't eat Greenies and I give him milk bones every so often. |
I gave my girls greenies 10 + years, never had any problems. Milk bones none of my girls were ever a fan of them. They LOVED Jerky treats. I give Cody Natural Balance limited ingredients treats only. All the treats I use to give my girls I won't give to Cody since joining YT scared the c!!p out of me. |
I give mine the original Milk Bone Dog Biscuits, LARGE size for Large dogs....they are called "cookies" around here and when I ask everyone if they want a cookie, half of them run to the cabinet in the kitchen where the large box is located...they love them! ANY treat or toy I buy for my dogs, I get the ones for LARGE dogs, so I dont have to worry about choking on little toys or chews/treats. I had ordered some from a little boy on Shark Tank...home made and everything....they liked them but they were tooooo small and I worried myself sick that someone was going to get the entire bone in their mouth and strangle. I do not like Greenies...one of my new owners gave Greenies and it caused GI BLEEDING because the dog did not digest them..... |
I gave my yorkies Greenies years ago but it quit giving letting them have them because they often threw up after eating them. For now I let them have the C.E.T chews I get from Revival Animal Health. What I highly recommend is a water additive called Voratene. It is an enzymatic brushless oral solution for dogs that freshens breath as it reduces plaque build-up on the dog's teeth. You just add a couple of squirts in their water each day. It is odorless and the dogs don't notice it in the water. I also buy it from RevivalAnimal.com. |
If it's for your dog's teeth. Best thing to do is brush them from the start. Is its to late wipe them down with a cotton swab. Takes a few months but they get use to it |
No more milk bones for us. I let my boys have them once a month when we went to the bank drive through. Max does okay with them, but Teddy had diarrhea from one on Friday. :( I will bring chicken to substitute in the future. |

I am on of those crazy momma's . . No milk bones or greenies. Galen doesn't get many treats. But when he does he only gets ones that do something for him or are extremely healthy. I give him coconut oil, Coconut Chips, Dynamo Dog -skin and coat, Primal Dry Roasted Venison Lung Puffs, Primal Dry Roasted Buffalo Liver Chunks, Plato Salmon treats, Preen Wild Salmon dog treats, Stella and Chewy Carnivore Kisses Wild Alaskan Salmon treats or Stella and Chewy Carnivore Crunch Beef Treats. We are loving the fish treats. Great for his skin and coat. I just got him freeze dried tripe . . We will see how he likes it. |
thanks :) yeah I'll be looking into other treat options. iv only ever owned larger breed dogs before and the only time i had to worry about what would upset their tummies or not was switching foods or once they got older and when dot (my border collie ) had liver failer :/ so yeah, i will be looking into other treats :) |
Mine would never eat milkbones or any kind of biscuit kind of treat. Greenies everyone used to give on here back in the day untill the reports came out they were harmful then we all quit giving them. |
Mine are snobs. They try to give them Milk Bones at the Stwrbucks drive thru but I find them in their car seat unbeaten. |

I don't think they were greenies, but when Lola was about 6 months old I bought something that looked kind of hard and was in the shape of a toothbrush. I was gardening and wanted her safe from mulch and stuff like that, so I brought her crate out and kept moving it around the yard, I gave her this toothbrush looking thing thinking she would chew on it for days, to my surprise less than an hour later it was gone, I kept looking all over for it thinking surely she could not have eaten the whole thing, but she must have, that night she had severe diarrhea and it continued for over a week, we went to the vet twice, she had all sorts of tests for parasites and so forth the only thing that cured her was imodium. Her butt was so raw she would scream in pain when having a BM, to this day she gets very upset if she has the least little trouble with her hind end. She has a very hearty tummy and that has been the only thing to ever upset it. A year ago a friend of mine gave the same type of thing to her yorkie with the same results. I think those type of things look hard but disintegrate fairly easy when mixed with saliva and is really to much for a small dog to digest. When it comes to milk bones I feel lucky that Lola will eat them, I mostly give her the little round ones that have the fake bone marrow in the center, but she will also eat a mid size milk bone. While I don't think a dog should eat of diet of these because there is little nutritional value in them, I don't think they are harmful to the dog either. Lola is my first dog to eat a dry bone and her teeth and breath are so much better than any of my other pups. She is 4 and a half and her teeth have never been cleaned and she has almost no tartar on them, I feel that her dry kibble food and the crunchy dry treats have a lot to do with it. So thumbs down for toothbrush looking dental chews and thumbs up for crunchy milk bone type treats |
