3 miles should be nothing for a healthy yorkie, I am sure you probably take a break or two a long the way, if it seems like he is dragging, have your hubby carry him for 5 min. The problem that I find when hiking is not the pups endurance it is the condition of the trails, several we hike have tons of small rocky sharp pebbles, when we come across a mind field of that type of ground either my husband or myself carriers Lola over it. Also be mindful of burrs and sticky bushes. I think it was in the fall but we were just in our neighborhood and when I got home I discovered she had about 50 burrs, it was awful for Lola and for me sine I had to pick them all out of her |
Because I am not in the best shape most of our hikes are on the lower levels of difficulty. They are mostly paths in state parks and the terrain isn't too bad. I really think Teek will do better than me and probably be hiking circles around me waiting for me to keep up. I will let him set the pace for the most part to see what he can handle, unless he is having to wait on me, then I guess I will be the one setting the pace, as usual. I hold up my entire family when hiking. I try though, I really do. We are planning late May/early June for our first hike. Unfortunately we have been really busy lately on the weekends. We will see how he does. I had not thought about burrs and I will be sure to watch for stuff like that. I had thought about ticks and fleas. I am trying to see if I can grow out Teek's hair, so not sure how that will work for hiking, but we will give it a try soon. |
another thing that helps in very warm climates which I know you live in is to get their harness wet it will keep them much cooler, when we walk and it is very hot as soon as I get Lola wet she is full of energy. I use a mesh jacket type harness so that stays wet quite a while and then as we go we pour a little water over her back. I will never forgot my first time walking up that park near Gatlinburg TN, it was my first weekend away with my soon to be husband. We took Reggie my first yorkie, he was good off leash and as we began to hike up, he would run a head about 50 ft then run back to us, he did this all the way up to the top so we figured he walked the trail twice, I was in pretty good shape back then, but he was much better at it then my DH and I. Of course now I would never let my pup off leash on a trail but now I am older and wiser |
I will have to see what Teek thinks about getting wet while walking. I don't like to be wet and walking myself. Maybe when I am done with the hike. I will see what he prefers though. Who knows, he might just jump in a little creek or something and surprise me. I am really looking forward to it. I have been to Gatlinburg several times, we love the National Park over there. We have a lot of state parks around us that are within about an hour drive. I can't wait to get the pop up camper going so we can actually go somewhere with it and be able to camp and hike and just have fun. Teek is going to love camping, I can already tell. When I go out in the camper he just makes himself at home while I tidy it up and organize it. |
