You are doing more harm then good to your beloved dog by feeding him ppl food. He is not getting the proper nutrients that a dog needs to thrive and be healthy, what ever you are feeding him must be high in calories, plus he is eating more then the recommended amount a dog needs a day. A over weight dogs put strain on the heart and legs. Also it prohibits his exercise because he will tire easy from being over weight. No you are not being kind to your dog. You are helping to give him a shorter life span. A dog will not starve himself. Yes, they are picky eaters, but once a dog knows if he turns up his nose at what momma gives him he will play you until he gets that yummy ppl food. Yes it is a pain in the butt trying to find something he will like and eat, have you tried sprinkling a little Parmesan cheese on top of this food to entice him to eat, or a bit of cottage cheese on top of is food, or mix some wet food with his dry food or moisten his dry food. I would give him agood quality dry food, mixed with a little wet food, set it down, he he does not eat it in 20 minutes, pick it up, put in frig, wait 30 minutes set on floor again, keep this up until he eats. Yes, DO NOT GIVE IN TO HIM. It is very hard on us to do this, we think we are starving our babies a dog will eat, they will not starve them selves. If he does not eat for one day he will not die, but will be very hungry the next day, these yorkies are very smart, and very stubborn an great at getting their own way. Yes it can be costly trying to find something they like, for you, it will be twice as hard because he knows you will give in to him. If you love your baby, you have to be strong and firm and get him to eat a nourishing dog food, And DO NOT LOOK AT THOSE EYES when he stands looking at the frig, that is our down fall, the eyes. |
I agree with Matese. You wouldn't feed a child only chocolate bars if that's all they want to eat because you know it's not good for them. Out of love you make them eat healthier foods, get exercise and on occasion you may give them a treat. The same goes for your puppy you love. If you want him to live a healthy, long life you need to give his little body what it needs to stay healthy. |
I know this pain well >_<, thankfully my girl is not obese but she is a bit chunky and the vet said even though she's young (10 months) she just needs to lose a few pounds to help her luxating patellas. So far it's going pretty decent and I plan to get a pool so I can do hydrotherapy. It's getting my mother to not feed her so much that's been the problem (but now I think she's finally getting it) as she's the one that feeds all our dogs tons (and this is just with canned food, scraps and dog treats). Now I don't buy treats (for now anyways), and we feed an occasional veggie as a treat. Have you ever thought to look into homecooking for your furbaby? I would of course ask either a pet nutritional or the vet for recipes/suggestions and some sites offer recipes for proper recipes such as this one. https://secure.balanceit.com/ It gives you both the satisfaction of "hand" feeding you're furbaby fresh food and they get the taste and nutrition they need. You can also take comfort in knowing exactly what goes into their food. Other options is getting dog foods that are "fresh" or wet, there are plenty of good companies that offer stew-like meals :) I used wellness canned chicken, lamb, and/or turkey stews in the past and all my dogs love it. Just remember proper portions for the day. |
My mom has similar issues. And I'm able to somewhat enforce "no human food" when I'm there. However, when I'm at work or out, all is fair game. :( Good news is, I've made a deal (for lack of better word) with my mom. She can give M/Z human food BUT! only what's on the list that I have made. It consists of some fruits, veggies, rice, chicken, etc... I think your biggest obstacle is yourself. Try to change your giving in habits bit by bit since it's next to impossible to change over night. |
If it is that big of a problem then look up what foods are good for a dog and feed them those. The vet has told me white rice, boiled chicken, oatmeal, plain yogurt. That kind of stuff and then mix their dog food in it and that way you are giving them some people food but they are getting their dog food too. I give Teek a little tiny and I do mean tiny pieces of some of the stuff I eat, but only the things that are no so bad for a dog. I will give him a crumble of my hamburger patty, but I am talking like what would break off and fall on the floor when I bite it. I will give him a little tiny corner of a piece of bacon. This is like 1 thing per day kind of people food. He loves it and feels like he is so special and I am not making him fat by only giving him the slightest little taste of things. He loves veggies though and will eat veggies if I offer them to him. I have not found anything that he does not like however. |
