questions from a first time owner After about two weeks of anticipating, I finally got my little baby, Luna.:aimeeyork :D:D After getting her, there are several things I'm concerned about. I was told that she is housebroken, and she hasn't had any accidents at home yet. But, since I gave her freedom of my home and I'm not home for about 8-9 hours, I put down a puppy pad in the kitchen. For the past 3 days, she has held her pee and poo until I got home. She never uses the pad....I'm not sure whether to be proud of her or concerned that she hasn't peed for 8 hours. One thing I thought about, as I was typing this, was that I would have no idea if she peed on my carpet since it's a darker brown. If she has an accident, would she do it in a obvious place? I want to know if she has one or not.... Another question, how do eye boggies(sp?) look like? I've heard that yorkies usually have some, and I was inspecting her eyes today, and saw some thick gunk that has matted some hair near her eyes.:eek: Is this what it is? I'm sorry for the long story, but I'm about to schedule a vet visit just for general checkup, but I still inspect her for any surprises..... |
Congratulations on your new pup! I don't know that I would trust her in a new home. I put mine in a play pen while I'm away from home until they were trust worthy. I just use a warm wash cloth to wash down my dogs' faces. Don't let those eye boogers stay. I have read some where that they are acidic and burn the skin. |
I would limit her area...preferably use an exercise pen with a pee pad, food, water and toys. I would be very doubtful that she has not had accidents. It is more likely that you have not been able to see them. It makes it more difficult to potty train if the carpet smells like urine to them and they have used it as a place to potty already. |
Congratulations on your new baby! For eye boogies, I use a wet cotton ball and wet down the area first. Then I use a flea comb with tightly spaced teeth to comb out the gunk. My boys get boogies from hair being in their eyes when they snuggle at night. Max also had some allergies last fall that made them worse. |
I think I should clarify that Luna is a 3 year old rescue that I adopted. She seems to be housebroken....pees and poops every time I take her out. I make sure to give her a treat to reinforce that. |
I tried to buy an exercise pen, but it turned out too small for her, she's 10 pounds. My grandma is visiting for a bit, so she's not totally alone. She can't take Luna out though, that's why I have the pee pad. |
For the eyes, I use a wet washcloth to loosen any gunk and then comb it out with those comb/brushes normally used for mascara and eyebrow shaping? Because the mascara/eyelash comb is fine but also has some space between the teeth, it's a great way to comb around the muzzle when there are knots due to food or the gunk or whatever. Congrats on your new rescue! Might be a good idea to check the carpet, if you can, but adult dogs are normally okay to hold their bladders and stuff for longer than puppies. |
She may be holding it all day because she is an adult. You will start to smell it if she is going on the carpet. I honestly do not give my dogs full run of the house while I am out until they have earned it. Start with gating her in the kitchen area while you are gone and give her full run of the house when you are home. If you know she is not peeing/pooping in the kitchen for several days to a week then give her more space if you want to. My dogs have free run of 3 rooms of my house while I am at home (I am a stay at home mom) and then my big dog I have had for over 3 years and he has earned being loose in those 3 rooms while I go out and run errands. I can trust him for about 3-4 hours. My Yorkie is very new to me. He is 9 years old and bathroom wise I think he would be okay. He doesn't really chew my stuff, however he has trash issues and I do not leave him loose for more than 20 minutes because I think he tries to tip over the covered trash can so he can eat the trash. This was a huge problem at his previous home from what I understand. |
Thanks for the advice everyone. I just found out that the rescue doesn't really know how old she is, they estimate anyone between 3 and 5 years; so she's a lot older than 3. I took a closer look at her eyes, there is a small section that is already matted on both sides. I just started using a warm damp cloth to clean it out, I wasn't able to clean everything out. I will have to be doing it every day until it's gone. I also had a question about collars. I just got a new collar for her and she's been rubbing her neck and her entire body on my carpet. I wasn't sure if this was a yorkie thing... or just her new collar. She only does this maybe 2-3 times a day. Thankfully, I'm planning on calling the vet tomorrow to make an appointment soon. Since she's a rescue, they only did basic testing. |
