Teeth brushing solution I've posted before about the difficulties I've had brushing Joni's teeth. We struggled with a small toothbrush (both baby and small pet size) as well as the finger covers- the plastic with bristles and the terry cloth sock type. Joni just had her first year checkup and our vet noticed some slight buildup at the gum line so we obviously had not done an adequate (and I admit a frequent enough) brushing. After I explained all that I had tried, she suggested that I roll first aid gauze around my index finger a couple of times and use that as a brush. It's not as thick as the terry cloth sock and not a strange object like a toothbrush. And because it is thin, I can get to those back teeth in that tiny mouth and can feel the teeth thru the gauze. The netted surface of the gauze with a bit of CET toothpaste seems to clean nicely. So far this has been a good solution for us. So simple and don't know why I didn't think of it already. But wanted to share in case any one else was troubleshooting teeth brushing. Good luck! |
Awesome tip...thanks for posting this :). |
Great tip. Dutch hates having her teeth done. I"m just using the dental gel but that's only because she won't let me brush her teeth. Thx |
Wonderful tip!!! thank you for sharing it. |

This is probably a dumb question, but do you wet the gauze or just leave it dry with the toothpaste on it.? |
Great tip, I am going to try it ! Zoey hates when I put a toothbrush in her mouth, you would think I was trying to kill her.....LOL. Thanks for sharing. |
Thanks for that, I'll try it tonight! We've been struggling too with Dex, he hates the finger brush and it's turning into a real battle every day. |

good tip, another thing that just worked for me, is I bought a child spin brush, it hardly makes a noise, I can get it way in the back of her mouth and I let the vibrating motion do the brushing instead of me, in fact we just finished 10 min ago, she still does not like it but I think it's more effective than trying to hand brush, OH and LOL it's pink and has Barbie on it:D |
I do dampen the gauze and I put the toothpaste all the way around my finger. After I think I've gotten all the teeth, Joni will chew on my finger a few more minutes and I just figure that is extra brushing! |
My breeders does that. But I've always had luck training my dogs since they were 12weeks. Take time but they all give in. harder to do once they get gum disease. But thats how I started with Moki is the gauze. But my finger is bigger then the tooth brush so I have better luck with that |
I will try this. I have used the finger brush and a child's toothbrush but I can never get in either puppy's mouth long enough because they get too excited over the toothpaste and jumping around and they are licking my finger or the brush and not letting me open their mouths wide enough to brush their teeth. I will try this to see if it works. |
Great Tip! I will have to try this with Sophie! I took her for her 1st yearly check up and the vet did not mention any problem with her teeth so I am guessing she is fine... A neighbor of mine got her Yorkie a day after I got Sophie and when she took her for her first yearly check up (same vet) he mentioned some build up on dogs teeth. So I do know that is something he does check in his yearly. It is not easy brushing Sophie's teeth but I also give her C.E.T. Dental Chews and that probably helps too! |
My vet told me about the gauze too bc Momo hated teeth brushing...after awhile, he got used to me putting my finger in his mouth, he eventually let me brush his teeth w/a toothbrush. |
Geez, you guys are good. I can't get even get Piper to hold still long enough to even get a finger in between her little chompers. She's started on the dental cets(?) and has to have a spritz of freshener before leaving house (she hates it, but knows we won't go for ride in the car until we do it...) I didn't force it, let her know what needed to happen and then left it up to her and once she figured it out, she makes a face, (I swear! Ok, maybe I'm transferring emotion), but jumps up next to me right away now. That's as good as dental hygiene gets at our house thus far... |
