Question about collars. I am not sure that is what they are called but they are the deals that keeps your baby from licking after surgery. Spice will have laser spaying done and I was wondering if I need to get one? Or if I would put a onesie on her most of the time if that would work? |
They are called cones. I used baby onesies on ZoE after her spay. You just put them on backwards and leave the middle snap open for the tail to go through. |
Thank you ! Great idea. |
If you decide to get a cone, make sure you get the soft ones. Not those plastic type. I'm pretty sure there's a member here that sells really nice/comfortable ones. I can't remember who that was... Can someone chime in??? I like the cone type better b/c I know they can't chew through it to get to the area... I think it's good to keep one for future just in case. :D |
Thank you . I will follow and see if anyone chimes in . |
My baby just had surgery and they put that God awful plastic cone on her. I asked if they had the "donut" type which they didn't, but a tech that works there told me they sell them at Petsmart. I got one and it was great. The only problem with them is. Since you inflate them (like blowing up an inner tube) that little doo hickey you blow into pushes in, but enough sticks up. The thing is attached around the neck and secured with velcro. If you put it on so the blower up thing is underneath (seemed logical) well, its not that hard for her to rip off the velcro!! I opted to live it with velcro down. She did deflate the donut during the day, but it still managed to serve the purpose. She couldn't reach her surgical site. I didn't know about the onsie at the time. But she is a chewer (teething big time) so, I still wonder if she would just have chewed the onsie off too. But you can start there. I don't think the donut was that costly, but I honestly don't remember what I paid for it. |
With laser surgery Spice might not need it, but I purchased a soft collar from YT member Mom to Hot Rod. It's much better than a plastic collar. A onesie is also a great alternative. The Kiss-E Collar |
WOW!! I went to that site lisaly and she has some beautiful things in addition to the cute cones! |

Kiss-e collars are wonderful. They are great to have on hand too, just in case! |
We used that dreaded cone with Sasha and she was fine. I talked to some people about the donut and they said it was hard for the dog to lay her head flat with an inflated ring around her neck. The only problem we had with the cone was Max would not go near her when she had it on! He was afraid of it! Onesies are a great idea but Sasha is a bigtime chewer. I took her to work with me everyday to make sure we could watch her but we have to sleep sometime. I was not going to take the chance that she would chew through them in the middle of the night and do damage to her incision. Maybe a combination of the options? |

I will be getting Elliot spayed in about a month or so. Will I need a cone for her? I had Duncan neutered a couple of months ago and didn't need to put anything on him at all. Are females different? |
