Cutting off the top knot It's taken almost a year to grow out my boys hair so that he can wear it tied up out of his eyes and now I'm thinking of the puppy cut again... So torn!! Should I leave it longer or cut and not have to fuss with the tiny hair ties any longer :aimeeyork |
that is the big question I have had in my mind also, I know Lola hates getting a pony and I hate doing it, but we have so many bows and it looks so cute that I hate to do it. I have been cutting it shorter and shorter since I hate how messy it looks when it flips over the side and hangs in all different directions. Now it cute and perky and stands up like a little firework. I got the idea for the yorkie named Millie La Rue, she always looks so put together without a floppy top knot |
you can sort of see what I mean in this photo, it's from facebook and it's public so hopefully you can open the link https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater |
My yorkies are 5 months old and 3 months old. My 5 month old looks so messy while I am trying to grow his topknot. How long does it usually take to grow a decent topknot, including the hair from his eyebrows to pull up? I am ready to get him a puppy cut again because he looks so shaggy. I have taken to calling him the shaggy dog ;) |

I have also been cutting the hair just above and in the center of the eye area. If you are not showing your dog you can go for sort of a modified cut so you don't have to suffer though that puppy stage. Some people also use little clip barette to keep the short hairs from hanging down and there is some sort of a styling gel that is OK for dogs, but I have never used it. |
here is another one, you can see how between the eyes are clipped and the top knot is cut almost like a little fan so it does not flip over, it sort of stands straight up in the air https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=3&theater |
OMGosh Donna she is such a precious baby!!! Those eyes just scream I am ornery but I am so sweet you gotta love me! LOL |
Donna, I love how you have Lola's hair!! What a beautiful baby. I put Sunni's hair in pigtails most of the time, because its still kind of short and its easier to part it and gather some of the eyebrows into them. She just had surgery so, I'm not messing with her fashion sense right now. When she's had a bath next week, I will take a new picture of her. Fiona |
Donna, Lola is simply gorgeous! I absolutely love her hair. |
thank you guys, that is nice of you to say. I apologize if it seems like I am trying to make this about Lola. I was just trying to give examples of how I solved the problem of the pony tail always hanging askew and looking messy. After I got through the puppy phase of the hair in the eyes I thought I was home free until I realized that the tail would never stay back behind the ears. Most of us do not realize that show dogs have their hair pulled back differently sort of like double topknot, one behind the other, that's why their top knots do not move, but to do that to a pet dog every day seems a bit much so I decided to chop off the long tail and leave a short stubby plume that sort of stands up straight. |
It must be because my hair is to my waist that I want to let Teek's hair grow longer to see how it will look. His hair is a lot less work than mine is on a daily basis so I don't mind brushing and combing his out daily, although my daughter does it most days because she enjoys it. I am excited to see what his hair will look like by next winter if I let it grow. However, a puppy cut is so much easier to deal with and I understand why people have the hair cut. I may change my mind halfway through the summer too, as I have not done a summer with him yet. We will see how he does though and decide as we go. |
