New to Yorkies Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000003136 StartFragment:0000002274 EndFragment:0000003100 Hello Everyone, new member here, and new to Yorkies also. Yesterday my wife and I brought home a 5 1/2 year old, 5.7 lb bundle of Yorkie. Her name is Buffy. We were fortunate enough to adopt her from a Rescue organization who had received her from a breeder. She’s doing extremely well we think, apparently never having walked on a leash. She loves going for walks outside, and can’t seem to take enough in. Now we have to work on house training. Wish us luck. Steve |
Hi Steve - welcome to YT - so glad to have you here! CONGRATS on your new fur kid. :) |
Welcome and congrats! |
Welcome, your going to love this forum and your new baby, you are in for the ride of your life. Yorkies suck you in and take a hold of your heart. They like to wrap men around there little paws, you will soon be showing people pics of your baby on your phone. It may even be the background pic LoL |
Hi! Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Congrats on your new baby. I adopted a 9 year old Yorkie in January and he is amazing. I was lucky that he was housebroken, or had been at one point and on my schedule he remains housebroken and only pee'd in my house one time the day after I got him. Not bad for having him for 2 months. Here are a few quick tips you may not know. Walk her on a harness and not a collar as Yorkie's are prone to problem with their trachea if walked on a collar. Put her on a good food as soon as you can, if she isn't already. Set the rules of the house from day one and she will adapt better. A regular routine is the best way for her to learn how things work in your house. Mine had to know right from the beginning how my house operates and he was able to settle right in. A lot of Yorkies like routine. The only thing we didn't stick to was my husband saying he had to sleep in a crate at night, that last 2 nights. He sleeps in our bed, but that is a story for another time. I would read the threads that are under General Training about how to rehab a puppy mill rescue (even if she wasn't from a puppy mill, I think it has some good tips on rehabbing a Yorkie in general) and also read about the House training that is also under the General Training. Also think about getting the book Yorkies for Dummies, mine is in the mail, but I have heard it is awesome. I picked mine up really cheap on Amazon used, like $4 or something crazy. You can search for a specific topic if you want and ask questions on here. There are lots of very knowledgeable and nice Yorkie lovers. Good luck and I hope she adapts well. I showered my guy with love and attention and he has blossomed into an amazing little guy. I was lucky that mine was not given the attention he needed, but he had not been abused or mistreated. He had a couple bad habits that I have worked with and he is making great progress. He loves garbage and I got the impression he was in the garbage a lot at his old home and that just doesn't fly at my house. He will shred plastic bags if left on the floor (I had to train myself not to leave any with groceries in them even for 2 seconds while I go put something away). I learned not to leave trash in the living room trash that he could reach, luckily our kitchen trash has a lid because our bigger dog thought the trash bin was a food bowl several years ago. He also seems like he got away with stealing food right off people's plates and from their hands and that is a habit we have almost fixed. It is slow going, but he is worth it! Good luck and enjoy! I am sure she will be your pride and joy. |
welcome and best of luck with your lil girl |

Welcome and congratulations on your new girl Buffy. She is beautiful, and I hope you have a wonderful life with her. It's great to hear how well she is fitting in. |
Congratulations on your new furbaby! You are going to love Buffy more and more every day. I am also a new Yorkie mommy; I received one for Christmas and another for Valentine's Day. I can't remember my life without them. I can't wait to get home from work to see them. They have wrapped their arms around my heart. This forum is a great place to find any answers to questions you might have. If you can't already find it listed on here, just ask and someone will chime in and answer. I know you and your wife are going to enjoy your new little girl. Congrats again. |
Thanks for the warm welcome Buffy is exceeding our expectations in every way. She has warmed up to us, much quicker that we expected. She is using the pee pads we put down for her. Very happily for both jobs. She is still limited to the porcelain areas of the house though, that is except for when she is crated in our bedroom for the night. Steve |
First, welcome to YT, and thank you for rescuing this precious little girl. She will be experiencing many new things she didn't have for 5 1/2 years when she was used for breeding only. Everything for her will be awesome. If you are planning for her to potty outside you must be consistent with feeding time and walking times. Starting on pads is fine, training for out side, feed her the same time every day. Most ppl feed twice a day, mornings and early evening. Feed her, wait 20 to 30 minutes, then walk her or if you have a yard, bring her outside. Even if she has already did her business on the pee pad, walk her anyway. Dogs get into routines, reason you must be consistent with feeding and walk time. They need a schedule, they will learn soon after they eat, they go out. Consistency and patience are the KEY WORDS for house breaking puppies and adult dogs. They say yorkie / or terrier breeds take a bit longer to train, I must have been lucky with my 4 now passed babies. As puppies by age 5 months they were 100% paper trained, at 7 months they were 100% house broken. Feeding and walked at the same time twice a day, no deviation in either, she will get it. Most dogs prefer to potty outside and look forward to that walk or being let out in yard. Good luck. Rescuing is soooo rewarding, and everyday you will learn something new about her, everyday you will see changes in her as she realizes this is her furever home. I have an adopted boy 16 months now and still finding out new things about his personality, his likes and dislikes. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Hi Steve, I'm sure you love Buffy already. These little dogs have a way of wrapping you around their paws. Most yorkies have lots of energy, but also love to be fussed over. Enjoy her and your time on Yorkie Talk. :) |
