Hello everyone! Bald spot normal? This is my first post in this group! I have a 10 week old puppy, weighing in at 1lb 13 oz, perfect in every way but a bald spot on top of her head, (she's still perfect!). I was wondering if this is normal, or what your experiences have been? Our last baby never had thin hair. The vet thinks her hair will start growing when she loses her puppy fuzz. Anyone else have this issue? |
Hi and welcome to YT :). A bald spot isn't really normal, no. My main concern would be ruling out ringworm -- did the vet recommend testing for this? |
Neither one of mine had bald spots without some issue. How bald are we talking? You actually mentioned/showed this bald spot to the vet and s/he didn't seem concern? |
Her hair is so thin you see the white of her head. I shouldn't have said bald spot, I'm sorry. It's only on the top of her head. |
That does make a difference. :) Is her hair generally thin? Would you consider her to be a silky coat? |
We got her 4 weeks ago and I don't remember it being thin there, then. I believe she is a silky coat. I other Yorkie that died had a furry, thick coat. This one is totally different. |

Pic is bit out of focus so it's little hard to see but.... It looks like it's starting to bald... If you mentioned it to your vet and s/he didn't seem too concerned, keep an eye on the spot and see if it seems to be thinning more/less. Just seems odd that the spot is on the head... |
Thank you! She didn't want her picture made at all today!! I am hoping it is from the puppy fuzz falling out. i will keep an eye on it for sure! |
Has you vet ruled out ringworm, which is not a worm, but a fungus, the symptom in a circular bald or thinning spot. My sister's yorkie had this when she was a puppy. My sister caught it from her pup and she to be treated as well. If I remember correctly the vet did not diagnosis it either, I think it was not till my sister discovered she had that they realized it had come from the pup. The breeder was very involved in rescue so they think it came from one of the rescue dogs. It cost my sister a lot of money to get rid of it, so rule this out as quickly as you can Canine Ringworm Infection | The Drake Center For Veterinary Care |
I just see that Ann mentioned ringworm as well, but you did not answer her question, did the vet rule out ringworm? |
He said there was nothing there. I've seen ringworm before on one of our outside dogs, I will watch her for that! I've had a hard time getting online with my iPad Sorry it took so long to reply. |
If your using a rubber band on her top-not then you may have cut the circulation off which caused the root of the hair to die. |
I've only used a light slide barrette that comes out when she shakes her hair. I was afraid to use anything tight. |
Glad you got your vet to check her out. |
