Need helpful advice Hi, I'd like some advice on how to rebond with my yorkie. Some background info: -she is 9 and we were once bonded, but I moved away for a year out of the country and left her with my parents. I have recently returned. -my parents have a 10 yr old female yorkie who is aggressive and became the alpha dog. She bullies my zoe and is aggressive with her when I show her attention. -now my yorkie doesn't listen when I call her (she used to). -my yorkie is detached and a lot more independent then she used to be. -both yorkies are crated most of the day in the same crate. How do help my yorkie bond with me again? Thanks |
I'd start by getting alone with your dog in a room, hold her and say, "_______,Come" and immediately stick a treat in her mouth. Do it 10 times in a row, 2 - 5 times a day x2 weeks. That will begin to teach her that saying her name and "come" means she has a right to instant treats. Work with her when she's hungry and use warm, boiled chicken for the treats at first. You want her to really want those treats! She will begin to like you for sitting there saying "come" and sticking chicken in her mouth - any dog would. After 2 weeks, she will think when she hears that word "come", she actually has a RIGHT to that treat. She will begin to fight to get to that treat if you move her a bit away from you and say "______, Come", so put her 18" gradually advancing to 36" away from you and repeat the "come" and instantly treat her the moment she comes toward your hand and takes it, 2 -5 times daily X2 weeks. Begin to smile, praise her when she gets to you, takes her treat. At the end of that month, she should have learned that "come" equals good treats, happy praise and she will learn to run to get to you. That's a good start. Lying quietly in the floor, down on her level, covered in her favorite treats(wear old clothes!) and letting her come up and eat them off you will build trust in you. Don't look at her, don't talk or try to pet or fawn over her as she noses around and eats her treats - just let her to the approaching and eating, getting used to being close to you with nothing happening - no actions, no talking on your part. Sitting on the floor and just handing her treats will do the same, though your head won't be as low as hers and could take longer to build trust. Gentle play sessions down on the floor with her with a ball or squeaky toy will also help her get used to being near you but will keep the focus on the toy and not you - who are kind of a new person to her now. After that, simple, basic obedience training 2-3 times a day, 5 mins. a day - never longer - will help her begin to bond with you, as the training and good feelings and confidence she gains from getting her commands right will fill her with good, happy feelings toward you and in turn, she will begin to learn how to obey commands you give. Always work with her in a separate room from where the other dogs are until she is well under your control. Then crate one of them and work with her in the same room with the crated dog to inure her to obeying even when another dog is in the same room. That's how I'd start out for now. |
Take her alone for walks, training and just time alone with you. If she is treated aggressively when listening to you when the other dog is around it could be why she's not listening. |
Can they be crated seperately? That would be my first move, then play PEZ dispenser with the above recommended warm chicken treats. (I do the PEZ dispenser trick randomly with all my dogs to keep their interest. I want to be the most valued thing in their worlds - makes recalls nice and it really helps with my two hearing impared dogs, they check in with me a lot because of random treats). |
Once-in-awhile, when alone with her, be a little disinterested...or very interested in something other than her...If she's anything like my Piper, she'll be totally bewildered that anything could take your attention off of her and she will probably start making an effort to get your focus back on her--where it belongs all of the time for heavens sake!!!! |
