just rescued yorkie My daughter rescued a yorkie and we have never had a Fru Fru dog before lol please give us any tips you think we might need. Even no nos will help =) how should he be groomed and what should he eat, treats, to us etc. |
Congrats! You're now owned by a Yorkie. You'll soon learn that the little FruFru dog demeanour is just a disguise lol. How much time and effort are you willing to put into grooming? If you don't want to deal with many tangles a short cut may be more to your liking. I use honey nut cheerios, cauliflower, and cheese(sparingly), for treats. As far as what he should eat there are plenty of great companies out there Solid Gold, Wellness, Fromm, Royal Canin...there's a plethora! There's a Health Forum where members have discussed about every food and treat one could think of. How old is your rescue? We want pics! Welcome to YT! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Generally you might not want to change his food right away, because that needs to be done gradually. What is he eating now? Have you had dogs before? Is he potty trained? Yorkies are known to be a little difficult to potty train sometimes. Consider doggie health insurance if you don't know about the dogs previous health issues. You can look at those on-line. We love pictures! There is a ton of great information on this site so stick around and just keep reading! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! I also just rescued a 9 year old Yorkie 2 months ago. He is the light of my life! Love him and treat him well and he will adore you back I am sure. Remember when you bring him home to set the rules, don't try to change them later. Get him into a routine as quick as you can. Do you know how old he is? How old is your daughter? I am only asking to see how much of the responsibility of the dog she can take on. We brush Teek's hair everyday, sometimes twice, but my 17 year old daughter and I enjoy it very much and Teek loves it. Good luck! Jade |
Thanks for the tips. My 19yo daughter found him and is a huge help in caring for him. We aren't to sure yet of his age. Will know more after his vet visit. So far she has been the one to brush him daily. We do have a chiweenie already. So they are slowly getting to know each other. Dont want to overload the poor guy. I am trying so hard to not let him sleep w me. I have made him a very comfy bed. Its also hard to leave him when i go out. He has ended up going with me or my daughter. Hes only been with us 5 days. But i think he has us wrapped around his paw already. My husband, who was against bringing another pet home, actually bought him a collar tonight. I watched him talk to the cashier and said it was for our new dog =) |
Welcome to YT, you will soon find out this little FruFru dog is a fearless big dog hiding in a small dogs body lol. Yorkies are fearless and mighty hunters and will capture your heart in a blink of an eye. I would like to thank you and your daughter for rescuing this little boy. I also have a rescue, he will be 4 y/o in a 11 days, I have him 16 months. Enjoy this precious little critter, oh, in 3 months please let us know if he is still a little FruFru boy lol. |
Please buy "Yorkies For Dummies"....this is a super book for Yorkie owners....all kinds of priceless information, tips, hints, facts, etc.....you will continue to use this super book for the rest of your wonderful life with your baby! PLEASE, dont change food immediately! If the pup/dog is tolerating the food he is on, and he is eating it, just leave it alone until the dog is well settled into his new environment.....dont add to his stress and turmoil of adjustment, by changing his food that he is eating and loving and enjoying and HAS been for some time! |
You can pick up Yorkies for Dummies on Amazon very cheap. |
FruFru. lol Nothing frufru about them! Congratulations on making the world a brighter place for your new little guy. Now, don't let him fool you, he needs, no, deserves proper training, rules and guidance to make his life (and yours) the best it can be. It is perfectly acceptable to spoil him - within limits. Welcome to the world of Yorkies! |
""Please buy "Yorkies For Dummies"....this is a super book for Yorkie owners....all kinds of priceless information, tips, hints, facts, etc.....you will continue to use this super book for the rest of your wonderful life with your baby!"" best brush please help me know what brushes or combs to buy him. I am clueless:confused: We are taking "Chewy" to get his rabies shot tomorrow and can't be groomed for 2 days after. He has some mattes. Any suggestions as to how I can remove them? I feel the groomer will charge a million dollars lol:animal-pa |
The first groomer I took Dinky too told me she would charge extra for matted hair. So depending on the groomer or how much work he needs, it could cost more than usual. Also since this is a clean up, the cut might not look the way you like. Don't worry, the hair grows back. Or maybe you will love it. Enjoy this new little guy. They are so sweet, and yes he will own you! |
Is his name Chewy? I hope it is short for Chewbacca! My Teek is named after an Ewok from Star Wars. We were looking for names and although a few were suggested, I even tried a few for a few hours to see how they sounded I wasn't getting one that stuck. My husband kept saying he looked like an Ewok so we got online and looked up Ewok names and found a list and Teek was on it, so he became Teek and he loved the name from the first time I said it to him and his ears perked right up and I had his attention in full. He learned his new name in 2 days and he has loved it every since. |
