I once removed a hard vinyl "flapper". Went to a fabric store and bought heavy clear vinyl, the put it in the door as a new "flap". I cut about three vertical lines in it so it was easier to get through. It worked great. The flap was held in place by a couple screws. Do beware of the hawk thing, we have had some sad and close call hawk stories on YT. |
Please let us know how you make out with replacing that doggie door, and what you went with. yorkiemini suggestion sounds good, that's what I did without cutting slits, but all my dogs that have used my method had no problem getting in and out. The one pup I had that I thought for sure would NEVER go through this type of flap when I first got the door installed shocked me lol, she had no fear what so ever. They loved the freedom of coming and going. |
Doggie doors make GREAT portals.....for burglars! My neighbor two streets over can tell you all about it! We have had long conversations about doggie doors and their potential danger for small dogs.....I finally just gave up because she wasnt listening and I was wasting breath I was going to need for other things.....and sure enough, 4 teen agers entered her home thru the doggie door, and robbed them BLIND, even taking the wall plate covers from outlets and light bulbs from lamps......oh.....and her little dog!!!!!!!!! Oh well, she can never say she did not know!!! Good luck to you AND your little dog and your doggie door! |
On the subject of hawks, I talked to the Fish and Wildlife people and they suggested running heavy fishing line from the fence to the house back and forth. This method is used on some of the outdoor restaurants to keep the sea gulls away. I've done this and haven't had a problem. The lines are close enough that the bird knows it cannot safely fly through the lines. I'm checking next week with Lowes to see if I can get another door, clear soft vinyl. In the meantime I've propped it open for the little buggers. I've tried everything from bribes to shoving his tiny butt through the door but nada. I'll post if I find a replacement door. |
