Marking, blacklight evidence..then what? Hi All, I have purchased a blacklight (which may or may not work since it was shipped from China for $2!) to use for inspection of my house and evidence of marking spots by SirTeddykins. But, knowing there is little point in retroactively scolding him, when I find the spots (assuming I know that that's what has been highlighted), apart from cleaning them with enzymatic cleaner, what then? Do I just remain hyper vigilant around him when he's near those areas? Do I need to be if they have been cleaned and, if so, for how long? Should I just remain on alert until I'm almost sure that the behavior has been curbed or is this a lifelong thing because enzymatic cleaners can't be trusted? I'm using things like white vinegar, baking soda and Rug Doctor for pet urine. Can you all help with advice, please? Thanks! |
Good Morning! Does Teddy have free roam of the house when you're not there or is he crated? I honestly would tether him to me at all times and if you're unable to do that at times I would crate him or put him in an ex pen. Even without the familiar smell, he will find other places to relieve himself(marking). You have to watch him at all times when he's not crated and you're home. Rasta attempted to mark once on a leather couch and after scaring the crap out of him by clapping and saying "No!" loudly, he does it outside only now. |

I currently tether him when I'm home or he wears a belly band. He is always under supervision. Before this, I caught him a few times and corrected him and I THOUGHT this had rectified the situation. But then (like you've said), I caught him marking a few months later and found that he'd been doing it very quickly in alternate places! He is put in his crate when I'm not home. I am trying to see if I can train this out of him since neutering does not guarantee the behavior will stop and I genuinely believe this is a behavioral habit. In the mean time, I don't want the behavior reinforced by smells which remain because I wasn't aware they were there to clean - if that makes sense! |

A friend of mine's dog was neutered and he stopped but my dog isn't and after that one time realized his mama was crazy and stopped :p. I think it just depends on the dog and how you go about rectifying the behavior. I always use the baking soda and vinegar mixture when having puppies and it seems to work. Also, I have a carpet deep cleaning machine. How old is he? |

He's 15 months old and I was going to neuter him (as per the standard advice) but the breeder said she wouldn't neuter him until three years old for various reasons. Recently, the vet told me there was no real reason to neuter unless he was marking which I thought he was not at the time! But, even so, he said neutering won't guarantee the behavior will stop sooooooooo I have tried using cognitive behavioral therapy on him hahaha. We sit by the fireside and discuss his urges and healthy ways to resist those urges. It's bonding. |
Hmmmm, well if the behavioral therapy doesn't work neutering may be the best alternative. Rasta began marking around 13 months so it may be due to them going through their version of puberty. But instead of lifting weights and playing video games 24/7 he's marking on everything he considers his. Are there any other pets in your home? That may be a reason why. If you do neuter I'd definitely wait until he's 3 as your breeder said. I'm sure he/she knows more about yorkies than your vet. Has your breeder given you any input as to what she does with her males to deter marking? |
Neutering did not stop Max from marking |

The vet is a Yorkshire Terrier specialist. He loves Teddy so much that he's started a fan club..lol And, I haven't contacted the breeder re: marking - good point! I guess I didn't think to cuz I came here first! Thanks! Quote:
Thank you very much, though, for commenting. It just gives me more to think about for when he turns 3! |
Zoey still had this bad habit of peeing/pooing on the carpeted area randomly for the longest time. Thankfully, she stopped when she turned about 2-3. Then she started peeing/pooing on the area rug near her pee pad. Tried everything to get her to stop. Ended up getting removing anything that's carpeted and problem solved. Zoey... she's just REALLY stubborn. But once she gets it, it sticks. So I'm really hoping I'll be able to put the area rugs back in the future. lol |
Hi Misty If the stain is old - I would soak it for several hours in enzyamatic cleaner - and you will likely find places that you had no idea of were being marked ... I use OxyOrange - don't know if you get that in England. I also use vinegar and water too, but not on the same day etc. I would rely on that tethering for about a year and or the crate - I know sigh .. for some Yorkies it takes a long time. The good news is you don't have any intact females in the house which will make your life a whole lot easier. Like all training the faster the correction the more effective the correction - I like the loud sounds - OOPS - or NO at the first hint of a leg hike. Also a bell can work too. Whistle ... |

Well - Misty is there any overt medical reason for neutering - like an undescended testicle? History of cancer in his lines? How has his blood work been? History of hypothyroidism, diabetes, or liver disease? That would be some of the things I would find out from his breeder. |

After neutering him, I would feed on a schedule and take water up and give it at certain times. Allow him to drink as much as he wants when you offer water, but don't leave the bowl down. Try for timed bathroom schedules and put him in the crate or in a small area when he is unattended. Correct any inappropriate marking when you see it happening. I would also avoid the use of chemical cleaners which will set the urine like rug doc stuff. I would soak the area with nature's miracle and let it dry completely. You need to use alot of it to soak padding under carpet. Tile surfaces, I would leave slightly wet to air dry. |
I have had males neutered BEFORE they becomes sexually active...like 8 months old...and that kept them from marking. Once sexually active, this is like trying to stop a male cat from "spraying" to mark his territory....all males of all species mark their territory in any number of ways....I think it is instinctual, not behavioral, and I dont think it can be "trained" out of a male that is sexually mature. I have had people TELL me they trained their male not to mark, but I have just not ever seen it successful.....maybe it has actually happened, but I have not seen it. Your pup is way past the start of being sexually active.....I personally believe neutering him to stop marking at this stage of the game, is fruitless. I can NOT imagine what your breeder had in mind....waiting that long to neuter is pointless, unless she was wanting to utilize the dog as a stud.... Cant beat Natures Miracle Enzyme treatment solution.... |

Thanks for the advice - really do appreciate it! My parents Yorkie wasn't neutered until he was 8. He started marking at that age when they brought a male shih-Tzu puppy in the house. He stopped after he was neutered. Then, there are lots of people with dogs who mark despite being neutered. So, I don't know. Breeder def didn't want him as stud. My contract says no progeny will be recognized. She is a Crufts show judge so not a 'breeder' in the strictest sense of the word. Anyway, I will see if I can get that product here in the UK. If not, I'll see if I can get it imported. I've heard good things about it! Can't hurt, right? |
Oh, Teddy, you are such a little bugger. I really enjoy your antics but your mom is being kept busy. Teddy, you are so adorable that you can come mark at my house any day! Misty, it looks like Amazon uk carries Nature's Miracle. I buy that stuff by the gallon. Mine are 99.9% housebroken but after other dogs have visited I occasionally find the area rug in the living room has been targeted. I have treated the marked areas sometimes as much as three times. I soak the area, let it dry completely and then do it again until I'm sure it's neutralized. |
