jumping off furniture My girl Spice gets up on my love seat and she will jump down. I understand this is not good for her, is that right? She is 6 mo old and weighs 2.7 lbs.:aimeeyork |
Yeah, not good for her at all. She's so tiny and it will only take her one wrong landing to really get hurt. I would suggest getting a dog bed or pillow of some sort and training her to jump off on top of the pillow so that it cushions her landing. Also, not letting her on the couch unless she is supervised and than of course you putting her down once you or whoever has her places her safely on the ground for on the cushion. This way she will make that a routine thing and help for her to know that is a safe place for her to jump to. |
Over time will hurt also. Wears there knees out.. Unless they are bigger and have a pad or step. May not be so bad. But more then double there height would be way to high |
I would train her NOT to jump at all....very bad for those tiny little joints....and she is so tiny....I had a tiny little 2# dog fall off an 8in tall sewing basket, hit his head just right on the tile floor, and had seizures for a couple of months from the head injury. Those tiny little bones do not heal as well or as quickly as they do in a larger dog....she should not ever be on furniture, especially NOT left up there unattended because she WILL jump down, and one wrong landing, and you have broken bones, dislocated joints, or a dead dog. I am real disappointed your breeder did not tell you all this when you bought your puppy....shame on her! |
Yup need stairs or and ottoman. If they can't jump up that high they defiantly shouldn't jump down. Moki and jump pretty high hes a muscular 6# 10oz tallish Yorkie. But he is trained to go down the stairs or ottoman. Depending on the furniture. Never straight off |
Thank you ! I a going to tran her NOT to jump on and off and in the mean time I put a nice fluffy pillow there. Yorkiemom my breeder didnt tell me much of anything! I know her kennel was clean and all the pups looked good BUT she was feeding them all Purina puppy chow . That changed as soon as got her home!! She kinda shoved the AKC papers in my hands and took my money ! I did want Spicey as she was the runt and I was afraid she wouldnt get the attention she needed. I only wish I had found this forum before . I am learning as go. LOL This forum has been my Yorkie Bible! |

Yes I bought that book as soon as you told me about it when I first came to the forum. It is a valuable book. I go back and reread different things every day . Sometimes i like to hear from the experience of others as there are great tips and ideas here. |

Unfortunately this post hit home for me. We have major jumping issues. Our little girl thinks she is a mountain goat and she has the long legs and little body that get her anywhere she wants to go. She flies down before anyone can get to her and in early January she fell, seriously broke her leg. I WISH I could train her to use steps. She is almost healed and it's exhausting keeping her jumping under control. E X H A U S T I N G I am really not sure what more I can do. If there is a bed or couch around she flies to the top. ugh. One thing I would point out is her vet said to keep toys, pillows etc. out of her way so she can make a good solid landing. A tweak at the landing can cause trouble. If I put steps up, she jumps over them. :mad: good luck with your little one, don't let her get up higher than she is able to safely get herself down. (easier said than done if she is fast and wild like my girl) |
I know a women who allowed her new pup at 15 weeks of age to stay on the recliner alone and of course she jumped and broke her leg and dislocated her hip. Poor gal had to have surgery to repair it. Leaving a pup at any age alone on the furniture is never ever a good idea. Accidents happen and they being so attached to their humans will jump in order to be with them. My pups are larger Yorkies and I use to allow our pups on the furniture but not much any more. I just don't want to take the chance of them getting hurt. They are only allowed on one chair and only when they are sitting with us. They also have one chair that they can get on any time, its a chair that has a stool to help them on and off. |
Definitely stairs are a must have. Both of my little ones were trained to use stairs although Duchess is being a little stubborn. She uses them to go up the stairs but only uses them 50% of the time to go down. It's my fault because I can't forgetting to make her go down the stairs when she jumps off. I also think she is a little afraid to go down the stairs. I've tried putting her favorite treat but that doesn't seem to be working....oh well, have to keep trying. |
