Need guidance My 12 week (1.5lb) yorkie, Moose has eating habits , or lack thereof, that are driving me to complete frustration. Some days she eats her wet food (3x daily)...some days she completely turns her nose to it...no matter what is presented....even fresh turkey! She will eat kibble as we keep a bowl out. She gets Nutri-cal throughout the day to ensure no hypoglycemic issues. But I am living in fear that she is not eating enough and am completely freaked!!! Her energy level seems to be fine, she is alert and happy. Recent visit to the vet didn't see any issues with her having any issues that would cause a decrease in hunger. Any suggestions or ideas...I recently lost a pup a few months ago due to tracheal problems...so I am on edge to make sure that this little bundle has no issues. |
Nutri cal is great but I think I read somewhere on here that it can cause decreased appetite? How long have you had her? A dog that tiny and young won't eat much plus she may be still getting used to you. |
Hi am welcome to YT. I am sorry to read that you recently lost a puppy no wonder you are on edge. Nutrical is sugar so it gives an energy burst but you should feed them protein afterwards to keep up the levels or they will just crash after the sugar high wears off. If your baby is eating kibble at least they are eating. Many people have Yorkies on a kibble only diet because of dental issues. If your baby was not eating at all I would be more concerned. Buster was a real finicky eater in the beginning but he is a world class eater now! |
Breath......LOL.....Im sure everything is fine....Im so sorry to hear about your other baby....very sad... |

You can give the NutraCal in the am, and again at night....especially with her eating kibble during the day! I wouldnt give it all day long as long as she is eating kibble....give it at night to be sure to carry her thru the night....you have not had an issue with her and hypoglycemia have you? A baby that young, that little, has a tummy the size of a peanut in the shell.....that is why they have to eat frequently all day, because they cant eat great quantities all at a time! You are free feeding the kibble during the day, which is great....I always advise puppies be free fed to be sure they keep their "tank full of fuel", to provide them the calories they are using being puppies! If you just feel better about her eating something you can better visualize, like a little cottage cheese, or a little canned dog food during the day, that is fine, but I wouldnt worry about her not getting enough to eat as long as she is eating her kibble! |
Small dogs' nutritional needs can seem really small to us, but it could be the exact right amount for them. For example, my Marcel eats 1oz at each meal, which is really SO small...but it's what's right for his size. It sounds like your kiddo is health and eating...so just keep an eye on it, and I'm sure all will be well. |
My little one didn't seem like she ate much at that age so I always measured before and after to see how much kibble was eaten some days only 1/8 of a cup for the whole day she's now 8 months old and doing great |
If you are feeding a good quality food then your pup does not need a whole lot. The quality of the food should be your major concern as long as he is eating. |
