Marking!!!! Please help!!! Hi everyone :). I have a yorkie named Teddy he just turned 1 last week and recently he's been lifting his leg out of nowhere and pees almost squirts on the post of my bed or wherever he wants and runs off. He knows not to pee inside the house he's always been good on the wee wee pad and going outside but out of nowhere he's started doing this. I spoke to the Vet about this and she mentioned getting him neutered but she said it won't guarantee that he will stop. She even mentioned her own dog that she adopted at the age of 2 and he still marks and he's neutuered. I've contemplated this decision over and over. I'm not trying to offend anyone and I respect everyone's opinions but I just can't see myself putting Teddy through that. Am I being selfish? I just love Teddy so much taking him to the groomer is bad enough because I worry if they're treating him good or if they're hurting him. I know I know I'm awful but he's my baby. I really don't want to neutuer him. Has anyone not had there dog neutuered? Any suggestions on any cleaning items I can get at Petco especially for wood? I tell him no show him what he did wrong and ignore him for awhile afterwards. He stops then a few days later starts up again. Anyway I've rambled enough sorry guys I just don't know what to do. Any positive feedback would be awesome thanks. |
He needs to be neutered it's better for him. A not fixed male is more likely to get injured running off or try to get to a female in heat. It also makes him more likely to be stolen and sold to a puppy mill. It limits the chances of certain cancers. There really is no reason not to get him fixed. |
Neutering is definately better for him. There is a higher risk for cancer if he is unneutered. ... if he has just started marking then it is possible for the marking to be reversed. The longer he does it the harder it will. Every dog is different! My mother in law had her chihuahua neutered when he was 2 1/2 and while he doesn't mark in her house he still does it in mine....but we do have females in the house so I think that's why. |
personally if you are not planning to breed your male having him neutered is a good idea for lots of reasons, it does seem to settle/calm them down, it's does prevent some types of cancers, and will help (maybe) with marking issues. Having a healthy male pup neutered is normally a fairly easy procedure, and from experience not much of a recovery |
Marking behaviour is not corrected by neutering. There are several products you can use to clean up the urine/and or marking stains - to hopefully limit your dog marking/urinating in that spot. If you have no females in the house, the training for not marking/urinating inside is the same and will likely be more successful. I would recommend a belly band or at least have him on leash to you, so that you can correct the behaviour -this really works. In terms of male dogs, IMO, there is no overt health reason to neuter them. Speak to your vet about neutering and the pros and cons. Beyond health, it might just be easier for you to have a neutered animal, it might just help with roaming behaviour, and of course if he is neutered he can't contribute in anyway to breeding. |
I have an unaltered male and he's only tried to mark once in the house. I did a loud clap and yelled "No!". He does mark outside in our backyard. I'm a stay at home mom so training him was a breeze since I always have him with me. If you're unable to watch him when he's out having him fixed may be ideal. He may still mark but alteration may lower the chances. |
