Gizmo seems jealous... advice please. Recently Gizmo has become a little more jealous, protective, not sure what to call it. If I'm talking to someone he will cry and bark for my attention. He does the same thing if my bf hugs me or rubs any part of my body. If I pick him up then he's okay it's like he has to be included when attention is on someone else. This is just with people, if I'm on the phone he's fine. Any recommendations? |
I think you need to take on more of the roll of 'Pack Leader'.....I dont think its jealousy, your little guy believes he is the boss.....:aimeeyork |
Sounds like he's letting you and everyone know you're HIS and doesn't approve of anyone else having any interaction with you. LOL I've seen videos of where dog(s) will nudge him/herself in-between a couple when they sit on the couch or bed together. |
I agree...:) |

How do I take the lead with this one. I tell him no, quiet and no bark. I'm not sure what else to do. We did a test last night to see if it's just when my BF hugs me, but he did the same when my son was hugging me and barked until my son let me go. |

You might have to let him bark it out a bit. If you stop hugging or talking b/c he barks, he'll learn: barking = stop doing what he doesn't like. |
Great advice - thank you! I will start doing the treats today. |
Also you could ignore Gizmo a bit more and concentrate on your son and b/f's relationship with the dog....perhaps let your son or b/f give the treats....:aimeeyork |
Another Suggestion I have had dogs for 5 decades now and have done everything from AKC dog shows to Shutzhund (ok NOT with Yorkies on that). I have also found that if you take a lesson from alpha dogs and mimic their tones in you voice, it helps a lot. For instance, if you watch momma dog and her puppies, when they get out of line, she does little growling tones. So my suggestion, just to reinforce what others have said, is when you tell him "No" or "Quiet" you use lower voice tones (like as low as your voice can go) and make it a little gravelly. My personal experience is that this tactic works to quickly correct bad behavior not only by helping to put you in the "Alpha" or Momma dog position, but also by saying in their language that something is not acceptable behavior. Just my 2 cents. :D |
