Gracie is a termite! (problem) 1 Attachment(s) I'm wondering if any of your dogs do this. Gracie chews on wood, like the side of the door. I've also caught her chewing on the footboard of my bed! I bought some bad tasting spray but it only lasts temporarily, I'm just wondering why she has this strange craving. (here's a picture of her in action) |
Zoe hasn't started doing that yet but muffin (passed) used to chew on wood all the time. the phase never ended. |
these dogs just love wood, lexi eats it too , dont feel bad... |
Rocky has been caught chewing on the corners of the baseboards and licking the walls. |
We have antiques all over the house, and Cisco recently chewed up an eagle footed table (he chewed the eyeball clean off..) worth about 8 grand. Andy (my hubby) was not amused-thankfully he loves the dickens out of Cisco. I try not to give him complete run of the house, but Andy always undermines me, and lets him run through the house so I fear this won't be the last mishap  The photo of Gracie is adorable, but I know how aggravating it is. |
My Laila loves to lick/chew on the table chairs. I just push her away from them when she does and encourage her to pick up a rawhide or toy instead. Good Luck! She is adorably mischevous your little Gracie :) |
Sailor likes to chew on wood as well, it used to be things in the house, but we sprayed everything heavily with bitter apple and that stopped most of it!!! Now she just likes to chew on sticks or bark in the backyard!! |
My mom's yorkie Rocky did that when he was young. Right after he was potty trained and they thought they could leave the house on night to go eat and let him have roam of the house he chewed a little on everything with wood in their house. Kitchen table, Kitchen chairs, entertainment center...everything. Sorry I don't know how they got him to stop though. I think it just a phase. My husband and I just finished our house in Nov. and my little lucy has roam of the kitchen during the day while we are gone. We just put in new oak cabinets and I;m just waiting for the day that I come home and find the bottoms all chewed up. |
sounds like Yorkies really are little termites..hehe :aimeeyork |
Yep! Alot of the baseboards in my house have been knawed on  |
This is funny. My dogs never chewed up any wood but they were carpet chewers. :D |
I have three termites of my own That is a great word to describe them!! :p No matter how many chew toys you have they seem to zone in on the one thing you really would rather they not chew on. Mine were the worst when they were pups - although I just found the leg of my long table freshly chewed!! If they were big dogs they would've eaten the entire house up!!!! :p |
my maddie girl keeps chewing on our table legs...i just distract her with toys |
Ohhhh Yes ...Bella is doing the same thing! |
oh yeah Tigger loves to chew on the dining room table. |
I always joke to my husband we should forget toys and just buy Cali a block of wood. |
Try clear deodorant rubbed on the wood surfaces. Works great for us and lasts MUCH longer than the sprays. |
OMG!!!!!!! You guys, I am lmao. My babies do that also. They even chew the fire wood. I don't get it??????? I have the same problem. Baseboards, coffee table, walls. Of course they are better now that they are older, but still do it every now & again. I guess that is a good name for them "termites" too funny. Isn't it weird that they have the same traits? Even though they are termites I wouldn't give them up & I still want another one!!! |
try bitter apple or tabasco sauce rocky is a big termite too. i love the term. i spray bitter apple each day where he has started. his favorite place (my new bathroom cabinets) i place a 2 piece extention of an x-pen around so he can't get at it. of course then he found new spots so i move the x-pen 2 piece to the favorite du jour and spray everywhere else. if my real kids did that i would ring their neck! with him i just kind of smile  michelle |
Trixie chews on the window sill in the bathroom. I tried apple spray, but it didn't work. I tried red pepper, but she liked it and just ate it! So now instead of exposed, chewed brown wood, it has a red-pepper tint! I tried buying extra toys and chews, but she just buries those! Let me know if you find anything that works! :D |

Liquid dishsoap (not for the dishwasher) works great. The lady who I get alot of antique furntiure from told me to do this. It won't harm the furniture and Maddie had one taste and never touched wood again. |
My Mignon hasn't started on wood yet (5 months) but seems to love cement! She will lie on the patio and gnaw away at the stucco on the side of the house. I've asked my husband to check and see if our insurance covers "dog eating house"! :yelrotflm |
All of the corners are gnawed on in our NEW home. Chattie and Chizzie did their part to "break it in" and wear off the new. Since they have chewed off the corners, they don't bother them any more. Must have been a passing phase. |
You all have some good ideas, thanks so much! Hopefully I can get her to stop eating the doors off the house. :eyetearss |
You know, I've heard all the stories vitamin deficiencies, boredom, attention getting technique, but you want to know what I really truly believe--- Sometimes they just like the taste of the wood and the feel of it crunching in their back teeth. |
btw you could replace all of the wood doors with metal ones and put plastic guards on all of the moulding. |
Why is that! All the nice toys we buy, and they like wood and paper better???? Yorkies!!! Gotta Love Them!!! :D :D :D :D |
some one on here suggested the deodorant long ago and i tried it.. it does work. (and cheap too!) |
