how Often To Cut Nails I think my groomer is not cutting my pups nails short enough. When he gets back from the groomer you can still hear his nails on the hardwood fl. Are you suppose to hear them on a hard floor clicking. Also how often do you cut them. Thanks |
I generally cut nails once a week, after her bath. |
I think what happened to me was my groomer did them every three weeks so they got to long now and you can not cut to short because they will bleed. |
My passed girl's nail got very long due to not being walked on cement sidewalks or streets, which file a dogs nails. The groomer can only cut so much before the quick is clipped and they bleed. I had to bring my girl in every two weeks, the quick draws back with-in those two weeks allowing more nail to be cut. I took her in until the nails were the proper length. No you should not hear nails clicking on hard wood floors. Your groomer should have told you if the nails were to long and told you to bring her back in two weeks. I would bring the pup back to your groomer, let the groomer take a look at the nails see what they say. I use to clip my girls nails until I clipped the quick and she started to bleed I got frantic and called my vet, was told to use corn starch or flour to stop the bleeding,I found cornstarch stopped the bleeding faster. Their nails are so dark it's hard to see where the quick ends, so no more nail clipping for me. You can do it yourself, just take a wee bit off every two weeks. I take Cody every two weeks for nail clipping, seems his nails grow fast. |
^^ My boys also file their nails down naturally on walks on pavement, so I have not had to cut in years. We have missed a lot of walks the last couple of weeks because of weather, so I am watching nails closely. As long as the nails are not curling under or causing your pup problems walking, the nails should be okay. I think it is more rare for the nails to grow really long straight out, but I have seen it on another Yorkie, who probably could have his nails clipped shorter. |
If you cut them to short you can cut there vein and that hurts and causes bleeding. The longer the nail is and the longer they go without being cut the quick (the vein) will move further down the nail. My groomer cuts them every time they go maybe every 6 weeks or so but I like to file them once a week. |
I usually cut Blazer's nails once a week- right after his bath when they are nice and soft. |

My groomer recently told me that it is her experience that Yorkies tend to have longer quicks so nails are longer compared to other breeds. Not sure how true that is, but I was worried I hadn't cut his nails good enough before her visit and she told me I did great! I was surprised! She did take a bit more off but nothing like when I cut my cats claws for example. They go from knives to stubs! |
Wow Maximo you don't ever have to cut them!! Thats great. I have to take Sammie on more walks but we have like 6 feet of snow in New England so there is no pavement in site!! |

The more often you clip their nails, the more the quick recedes so you should be able to get their nails nice and short the more often you clip them. |
