Carrier recommendations please Hello! I have had my 10 month old yorkie, Ginger, for about 6 weeks now. I have 2 different "dog purses" that were given to us as gifts. They work ok for when we are out and about, but what I would love is something I coukd wear while I was exersing. I am hoping veteran yorkie owners can recommend a carrier option for when I want to take her on long walks, hikes, and possibly even jogs. Something comfortable for me to wear while exercising and something comfortable for her to travel in. Does such a thing exist? |
There are many styles of backpack carriers and sling carriers that would be good for all the activities you are describing, other than jogging. I would never put a jog in a carrier and subject them to the constant bouncing of jogging. A good stroller would be best for jogging. |
I agree, the best for bouncy activities, would be a carrier that's more stable like the strollers. Otherwise your furbaby will be bouncing around and whatnot when you move around so much. If you are just doing walks or power walks, the sling or "back/front" packs might be useful. My girl has thrown up when I move her bag too much in a bouncy motion. So I've learned to carry her in her carrier in a steady but almost gliding motion. |
Yorkies are very hardy...on any of your walks all you need is a leash. Carry water and a snack (they do have high energy levels). I don't run much with with my bunch but my male dog Jake would go for about 2 miles. Like me he was gassed when we finished but he would go stride for stride with me. Good luck! |
One of my owners participates in marathons and "our" baby Sophie goes to every marathon.....she is carried on Pams chest in a sling type carrier, and everyone loves it.....Sophie sitting in there looking all around at people jogging. running, walking, cheering, etc.....comfortable for Pam and Sophie just wants to be with her momma so she would balance on Pam's head if she needed to! Sophie has gotten to be well known in this area for her attendance to marathons, and of course, the crowd adores her! |
Thanks, everyone. A few of you mentioned the bouncing with jogging, and you may be right about that being too much. I will try to build up her stamina for walking on her own feet as much as possible. But since I am inexperienced with tiny dogs (she weighs right under 4 pounds) I don't know how much that small of a body can handle. Does anyone know of a good source for a sling? I saw a yorkie mom yesterday that said she got a "puppy pocket" on Amazon. Thanks for your help!!! |
