Home Security? So yesterday UPS dropped off a package at my house and when I got home I realize it was stolen. Being the paranoid person as I am I kept thinking WHAT IF this guy feels like now he can just break into my house and steal my stuff?! :( My #1 thoughts were my dogs and I'm now thinking what if he stole my two tiny dogs... Maybe it's just paranoia but does anyone have any suggestions on home security? I know it's motion sensored but is there an alarm that won't alert me when it senses my dogs roaming around? |
My alarm system works fine with my dogs. After we got broke into, we installed the alarm. I lived in the it won't happen to me world but it did happen. And it's something I will never forget. We have glass breakage, motion, window and door alarms, and don't have problems with our dogs. Are you looking at a particular company? |
With mine, the motion detector doesn't pick up anything under 20lbs. I only have ZoE, so that works for me. The only time she set off the alarm was when she tried to get to some food left on a low table, and knocked a glass to the floor. The shattering and her scrambling set off the alarm. I'm only 2-3 miles from our township police station, so the house was surrounded in minutes! |
My alarm system works great with my dog and cat too. You can turn off the motion sensor (If you are worried about the animals tripping it off) and just leave on the alarm in case someone breaks in. I also have cameras so mine is working out great for us. I can watch from my cell phone if I am running errands or out of the house for a long time. I have ADT. |
We have ADT also and they have set the motion sensor so that the dogs don't set it off. it's the two legged resident that has accidently set off the alarms. |
We have ADT and would not ever be without it - it makes us feel SO much secure and it makes us feel our dogs are more safe when we're gone. Our motion detector does not pick up the dogs, btw. |
I have ADT also. I have cameras all over the OUTSIDE of the house, so every angle of the yard is under surveillance, which was absolutely necessary with the felons that live next door to me! I also have laser beams intersecting all over my back yard.....the beams are set at 4 feet off the ground, so no animals trigger it when walking across the yard at night.....but if a human jumps into my yard and strats to walk around at night, an alarm sounds in the house....different tones for different sections of the yard, so I have a good idea where in the yard the person is walking around. Those run off batteries, which is a pain in the butt changing batteries once a year, but it is the cost of "doing business" when you live next door to thugs and in Houston! I was going to have cameras put inside the house, but then I heard people driving around the neighborhood can somehowe tune into your cameras and also look all over your house! |

I had heard that from many different sources...then they actually interviewed on TV one evening, a robber that said he knew his way around the house because of all the cameras that were inside....so that took care of me putting cameras inside my house. Kind of like how they can intercept baby monitors with cameras, and they watch your baby and the nursery through your baby monitor camera, and even talk to the baby through the monitor....they had a lady on the news just last week, she was in her babys room, and she heard a man's voice talking to her baby via the monitor, and then when she went over to the bed and was in camera view, he started talking to her!!! THAT is just tooo scary!!! I would do my own research before I asked ADT...they are SELLING those cameras, so they are not going to be right up front about what can take place with those cameras....just like on the "smart TV's" with the cameras on the front!!! |
Remember the woman who had cameras all over her house, each room, and she could pull up and look all over her house? Well, so can the people that know how to do that! She pulled up her house while she was at work, and saw several men wandering all over her house, throwing stuff in sacks....she called the police and told them what she was seeing...they got to the house and caught the men....but the same technology that allows people to look all over their homes, also allows anyone that is tech saavy and knows how to hack codes and frequencies, do the same thing!! |

Wow I'm surprised by all the responses! :) I wanted to go ADT but the reviews online are not so good...I'm assuming though most of you would recommend it? :) |

I remember when I first moved in, I had my friends take turns staying with me until my alarm system was installed. I am a city girl, and was so used to sirens. I wasn't afraid of muggers but I was definitely afraid of Jason from Friday the 13th :(. I lived in DC right across the street from a police department and a fire department. It was somewhat culture shock when I move to this area. I love it now and really could never consider moving back to the city. As long as I can get to in a 30 minute drive, I'm okay with living in the burbs |
I had Brinks since 1991 until Brinks bought it, so now I've got ADT. The slightest bit of deterrence could mean a thief passes us up. The sensors are about 4 feet or so off the floor so Jilly or Tibbe never triggered the alarm and it's only gone off w/out any known reason 3 or 4 times in all those years. |
