Washing Stuff Dog Toys? Hi everyone! I need some advice. I keep purchasing dog toys for my Yorkie. I did get an organic burt bees baby toy for my Angel but my Angel likes dog toys best and she loves the ones that squeak. I have been though a number of toys and found the following: (1) rope toys are dangerous because the dog is chewing the rope apart and could ingest it; (2) some low quality stuffed toys fall apart easily and stuffing is exposed, ears fall apart, etc.; (3) nylabones bones with the nubs are nice but my yorkie chews the nubs off and I am afraid she may ingest them. The best dog toy I have found so far is Huggle Hounds. It seems to stand up the best and does not fall apart so it appears to be safer then the others on the market, but they are more expensive. MY QUESTION: what is a safe washing method for dog stuff toys? can you use soap? washing machine detergent? Thanks . |
I have a few Kong stuffed toys and another that I can't remember the name of but it has double fabric and low stuffing, that I was with her bedding. I haven't had any problems. They wash well and still squeak. The Kong stuffed toys cost about 8$-15$ and the other I have was about $13 at Petsmart. I'm not sure if that helps but they work for me. |
Funny timing. I just thru all Sophie's toys in a mesh bag in the washer and dryer. Everything came out great. Just used soap only so no extra smells. :D |
I throw all their toys (squeaky/stuffed toys) in the washer every time I do laundry. Just make sure they're well rinsed and shouldn't be a problem. |
I've never had any problem with dog toys falling apart, I wish I could say the same thing with children toys. I wash them in the washer, I don't even use a mesh bag. Hard toys I was in dishwasher. |
:) I wash all Harry's soft toys in the washing machine - no mesh bag, and with normal laundry detergent, then dry them in the tumble dryer. I buy those soft toys that are long-ish and quite skinny but with no stuffing...saves one heck of a mess!!! :D |
I was wondering if new toys should be washed before giving them to my lil guy. Got him a new squeak toy the other day and he was playing with it and threw up a little later. Is it possible he had a reaction to the material from the toy? |

As for your little pup throwing up - it might have been the sheer excitement of a new toy...maybe?!!? :) |

Lol That too :) |
I just did a full load of toys this weekend. Washed them just like I would clothes and they turned out fine. |
thanks to all!! thanks for your comments. I hate throwing out her good toys, especially ones she loves. |
Add me to the list of people who wash soft dog toys. I use minimal soap. |
Brody is a toy-a-holic, so I pack my washer full to the edges. I can put two king size comforters in there and have extra space, but the toys leave no room and that's only about half at a time. I use Borax and Fels Naptha laundry soap only, or with washing soda, for all laundry. I do not dry them, but my front loader washer spins at 12,000 rpm, so the toys are virtually dry out of the washer. |

With store-bought toys, often times the squeakers would no longer squeak after washing, and I'm paranoid about the possibility of trapped moisture in a plastic squeaker growing mold. So, I made some of my own squeaky toys and modified some bought ones, so there is heavy duty velco in one spot, so i can take the squeaker out before washing. |
Make sure you squeak the water out of the squeakers...I wash in the washing machine & air dry. I don't use any detergent when washing their bedding + toys, I only use ACV. |
