Yorkie or Silky? As the title of the post says I'm wondering if Sammie is a Yorkie or a Silky. Until last night I had no idea what a silky terrier was. I have a friend who brought up the subject, because Sammie is a tall Yorkie. After doing a little digging the two breeds are cousins and they look a lot alike. The only difference I found was that Silkies are slightly larger than Yorkies. When I take him to the dog park he does look taller than all the other Yorkies. However, it is kinda hard to tell how large Sammie will be as an adult. He is only 6 months. It is funny to see the shock on other dog owners face when I say his age. My wife purchased Sammie from a pet store 3 months ago. He does have papers however, they aren't AKC papers. (I read into the difference in the papers) My family and I have grown to love Sammie over this short period of time, even though he is really bossy to my other dog. He has learned over 20 commands/tricks. To sum up my long story I just wanted to know if anyone also else had this same issue? |
The first few days I had Piper, many people (vet techs, groomers, etc) insisted she was not a Yorkie, but a Silkie (didn't matter to me); however over time it was determined she is, indeed, a Yorkie~~lots of sizes with these little dolls! |

1 Attachment(s) Thanks for the advice, Ill have to look into getting a test for him. I added a picture to show his long legs. |
This may help: Yorkshire Terrier - American Kennel Club Your boy looks like a Yorkie mix. Pet shops buy from brokers, who buy from puppy mills. Puppy Mills | ASPCA If you do get him tested and find that he's a mix, maybe the store your wife bought him from will refund your money due to false advertisement. |
What a cute little fella!! Really, what difference does it make? You love him just the same right? I have an AKC Silky Terrier, and a what I believe to be a Silky/Yorkie mix. I think your Sammy looks all Yorkie to me. He looks very different than my Silky. Don't let the size thing bother you. People think that just because a yorkie puppy isn't "tiny" they must be a Silky. In reality, both breeds can be bigger or smaller. My Silky is only 7lbs, which is small for a Silky. Yorkies are supposed to be square from a side profile, just like Sammie. That means their legs are as long as their backs. Silkies in comparison are more rectangle having a longer back than their legs. I like that side profile description because it shows how a Yorkie can be bigger and still be correct. His cute little face looks all Yorkie too though. Good luck with him. I hope he brings you many years of happiness. |

It's not just size there is differences with the snout and stuff. The thing about pet stores is they get there puppies from puppy mills so the dogs are not well bred and can still be fully bred dogs but just not look like it. I had also heard of puppy mills using silky moms and then yorkie dad's and passing them off as yorkies. Who cares though as long as you love him it is what it is. Please in the future though don't buy puppies from pets stores. |

I had a 100% yorkie, as a 8 week old puppy she was huge. When I took her for her first vet visit my vet asked if she was a silky because of her size, all I could say was her AKC papers read Yorkshire terrier. As an adult she weighed a beautiful sleek 17 lbs. Many ppl thought she was a silky because of her size. I thought I had the biggest yorkie in the USA until I found YT and saw how many members have large yorkies. If it really matters to you, do the DNA test. |
Hi :) 4 Attachment(s) Hi, I'm new to this forum and the Silky/Yorkie world. :) I adopted Alonzo from a shelter in Boca, FL in September, and they told me that he was a purebred Yorkie. But when I took him for grooming the groomer mentioned that she thought he might actually be a Silky Terrier. I asked the vet and she said it is possible. Since then multiple people in public have said that he looks much more like a Silky than a Yorkie. Alonzo is 11.4 lbs, has the triangle ears, about 23 inches in length from tip of cropped tail to his nose. He has very long legs and I keep his coat short but it is very wavy when I let it grow out. His coat is also very silvery and he is roughly 2.5 years old. His personality seems to be a mix to me. I can't tell which breed he is and I was wondering if I could get some help? |
I've looked and looked at pictures of Yorkies and Silkies because I had the same experiences. I was told by the rescue that yes, she is Yorkie. She was 2 lbs at 10/11 weeks..She's nearly 6 months now and a whopping 10 lbs. The groomer said she looks like a yorkie/silky mix, lol. The pet store I use, is owned by the mommy of three gorgeous Yorkies..she said....for sure Yorkie..just big. I question it because of her face too...she has extra big ears, and it seems like a longer snout. The snout thing is changing though as her hair grows out. Her puppy trim cut off all the hair around her face and ears, so she was all nose and ears. She does have Yorkie eyes and personality from what I read. Frankly, whatever she is, she's the cutest little thing I've every seen:) As a rescue, it doesn't matter. I know I saved her from a certain death, because of a genetic defect..so, she probably is a puppy mill or byb baby, who was in an awful situation. She's the most lovable, joyous little puppy. |
