Question about Yorkie Coat Length and Care 4 Attachment(s) Hello everyone! I have a beautiful Yorkie named Maggie who just turned a year old February 2. She weighs four pounds. I have only had her groomed one time when she was about four months old. Her hair is still pretty short now that she is a year old. I am wondering how long your Yorkie's hair was at a year old. I don't know if her hair is just slow growing or if it is just not going to get any longer. The hair at the bottom of her legs isn't that long and also the hair on her ears is short. She had them trimmed when groomed at four months and the hair still hasn't grown back. I am including pictures of her at different stages. The first picture is when she is six weeks old (we didn't get her this early, this is a pic the breeder took). Then I am posting another picture (with the pink bow) when she was four months and had her first grooming, and the others are current pictures of her. I can't get a good picture of her standing still because she follows me and gets right up under me). Oh and I will add that I did just cut the hair around just over her eyes. Just the top part, but I am going to let it grow back out and do a top knot. Nothing else. Also, what shampoo and conditioner do you all use on your Yorkies? Any information is appreciated! Thanks! Aw she is adorable, I think it takes a while for their full coat to come in and sometimes it changes colour as well. |
I think a lot has to do with genetics. My last yorkie had a very fast growing coat, and could go from a puppy cut to a floor length coat in a year. zoE has a very slow growing coat that seems more prone to breakage. At three years old, her hair was about teo inches off the ground, but never got to floor length, so I finally cut it off. Now I keep her body buzzed, and hair two inches long on her legs, face and tail. I absolutely love a yorkie in full coat, but came to the realization that it just wasnt meant to be with Zo. |
Thank yall so much for responding! Maggie's hair is only about three inches long on her body. It is SO soft and does not mat. I only have to brush her once a week (she could actually probably go longer it I don't do that). She just never mats. But it just hasn't been growing. I didn't know if this was normal or not. I just wondered if other Yorkies had a full coat by a year. Do either of you know a good shampoo and conditioner for healthy coats? |
Your baby is so cute and you are so lucky she has a coat that doesn't mat. Peanut is 10 months old and his coat is pretty long, not quite floor lenghth, but he has a thick, more cottony coat and it mats really easy. Although I love the look of a long coat, I think I have just about made my mind up to cut it come Spring. As for shampoo and conditioner, I really like the Petsilk Rain Forest. Leaves the coat soft and shiny and smelling good for days. |
Sounds like yours has the silky coat :3 So far it seems my girl has the cotton coat (very fluffy, but also very soft). |
All of yalls Yorkies are adorable!! I am so glad I found this site! I joined a while back but never really got a chance to use it until now! It's so good to see so many other yorkie lovers. So, Parti Peanut, since you said that your yorkie Peanut has a long coat at ten months then my Maggie either has a slow growing coat or maybe she is just going to keep a short coat. Judging by the feedback from everyone it seems there are so many different variations with their coat. I have only had one other yorkie and it was a family pet that I got at the age of fourteen and he just passed away a few months ago at the age of fifteen. He had a coton type coat. It matted extremely easily. So with that being said, I am not going to worry about how long her hair gets, and just be thankful that it is easy to maintain. :) Thank you Parti Peanut for recommending the shampoo and conditioner. I am about to look it up right now! Thanks everyone!!! |
Your baby is adorable. Echoing what others have written above, definitely a matter of genetics. Some Yorkies, like the show dogs, will grow a coat to the floor in 1 year or less. My boys' skirts (body) did not reach the floor until close to age 2. They are long legged, so that might have a little to do with it. |
