Silky -VS- Yorkie What is the difference? I just don't get it! They look the same to me. I participated in the thread that you had to "pick the yorkie" and they all look the same to me... Can someone please explain!? |
So far as I'm concerned they are the same. The only difference is the texture of the hair. Either way, it's a Yorkie. |
Two completely different breeds. Silky Terriers have Yorkie in them so they look very similar. Silkies are larger (which is why a lot of people who own oversized Yorkies get questions about their "Silkies") www.akc.org go to breeds go to toy find info about both Confusion may also come by the term we use to describe the fur on our babies. The desired coat is "silky" It is easy to care for, doesn't tangle and gives the Yorkie that beautiful show girl look. Many Yorkies have cotton coats. They require more care to keep them straight, shiny and tangle free. |
The "hair" texture is different. The silkies hair will not grow to be as long as a yorkies, their snouts are longer, and they are larger. |
When they ar pups I can tell the difference but I cant tell the difference with adults. |
I believe the silky "came from" the yorkie. In Austrailia someone took a yorkie and bred it with another type of terrier I believe. I may be wrong....does anyone know if that is right? The silky is a separate breed, they are bigger on average and their snouts are longer and ears bigger I think if you compare the two standards. |
There is not that much of a difference...their snout, coat, size and temperment. They are basically cousins to yorkies!!! But I love silkies as much as yorkies, they are just so cute to look at!! |

There really is quite a difference if you see them for real. Larger, much larger pointed muzzle and coat is really very very different. I've never read the standard but really when it's not a picture in most cases you can tell. I wonder if temperament is different??? |
I read somewhere that back in the time yorkies used to be called silkies. When they got them smaller they started to call them yorkshire terriers. I also read that yorkies where mix from all sort of terrier. THey think it's from snauzer, cairn terrier, wire fox terrier, and some other ones. Strange huh? Back to the point. Silky are biggers. But i think they are the same size as standard yorkies. My yorkie is the same size as my friend's silky. And silky as much cheaper. They do look the same. |
2 Attachment(s) Here are a picture of both as adults... The first one is a yorkie and then a silky!!! |

I was considering a Silky but wanted something smaller, which led me to the Yorkie in my lap :D |
Me to. I was thinking about getting a silky just because it looked like a yorkie and price was much cheaper but i did not want to take the chance that it was going to get big. I end up with a yorkie. |
Thanks Miss Magic Miss Magic, thanks for the pictures. I forgot one of BIG differences is large pointed ears. |
I have some information on the yorkie history on my site if you want to read about it. This is the addy for it. http://yorkieviews.com/yorkiehistory.htm |
