Does she know?!
 
Maggie was a amish puppy mill rescue. She was initially indifferent to other dogs. My friends dogs would try to play with her and she acted like they were not even there...but over time, with patience, she saw other dogs play and she started to join in! And now she adores my friends dogs, and LOVES my inlaws big sheepdog! None of these other dogs are yorkies but she is not the smallest of the crew. Anyways, we are traveling right now and I was out walking her this morning around the hotel and we ran into a woman with two little yorkies! Maggies little tail was spinning around and she was so happy she was squealing like I never heard before! This is the first time she has seen other yorkies since she was in the mill. Do you think she knows they are her breed?! It was just so interesting to me! Melted my heart. She kept sniffing them and then looking up at me like, "look mommy! yorkies!". Gahhhhh I love her!:aimeeyork

How sweet and a beautiful sight for you to see. Yay Maggie!! :)

I'm convinced they do recognize other Yorkies. Teddy is usually not eager to get close to other dogs unless they are Yorkies. I do not say the name until after our encounters, so I know it isn't because I am identifying the breed.

I am definitely not an expert but I wonder if Yorkies smell different to them than other dogs. It may remind her of that familiar smell.

Rasta could care less for any other dog but if a yorkie comes along he'll give them attention lol.

We take ours camping with us and we have noticed that our two Yorkies always enjoys the other yorkies they meet the very best. It is just so very cute to watch when they spy other yorkies, they love to play with them and feel more at ease with them.

I agree that Yorkies do recognize their kind. My girls always greet any dog big or small with nub wags, whining and such but with other Yorkies they jump up and down, yelp and go nuts till they can touch noses with them, but the nub just continues to fly. It's adorable!

Tibbe definitely shows a preference for other Yorkies when he's out and about. I guess he's seen himself so much in the mirror and spends his days looking across the alley at the little Yorkie that lives over there for as long as he's lived here that he really turns up his radar when he sees a Yorkie on TV or outside. It's the face and form he sees the most, I guess, so he definitely perks up around and seems to truly prefer Yorkies over other dogs. And as they all seem to act like him, I guess he recognizes Yorkie ways! There's no other breed with a face like a sweet Yorkie face and I guess it takes one to know one!!! :D

I see similar responses in Piper...She seems drawn to other Yorkies--as soon as she sees one approach, she's tugging toward him/her. She's interested in other dogs, but not nearly with the same intensity. There must be something...
