Vet visit Monday Hi all....My Teddi baby is being neutered this coming Monday....Im so nervous for her...she is 21 weeks old...is she old enough?...Can anyone give me advice on what i should or shouldn't do?...Will she be in pain afterwards?...Im sure the vet will advise..but i would appreciate the opinion of the experts here on YT  |
That should be fine. Nowadays, spaying can be done very early without surgical consequenses (not that a very early spay is advised). The biggest benefit is almost total elimination of the risk of breast cancer, which is the most common in female dogs. Sure it's always nerve-wracking to put your baby under, but it's such a routine procedure, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Yes, she will be sore after for a few days, but your vet should give you pain meds for her as well as a cone collar to prevent her licking the area. (Not that I'm any expert, which is what you asked for) :) Any concerns you have should be answered by your vet to your satisfaction before proceeding. |
Thank you so much for replying to my post....I feel a bit more at ease with your lovely calm answer...thank you again...Motinot & Teddi :):D:animal36 |
I would wait until 6 months personaly but that just me. As long as you get the blood work done before the spay everything should be ok. |
Your vet should give you pain meds for your pup. You'll be amazed how fast she will recovery. |

HI...lovetodream88......I think i will take your advice and wait a while before i have Teddi neutered.....I didnt know she would need blood work done..is this to rule out disease?...:animal36 |
My females were spayed at 22 weeks old (5 1/2 months old) the idea of spaying early is to spay before their first heat which can be at 5 1/2 to 6 months old. Best to spay now then wait 3 weeks till she is 24 weeks (6 months old) she can go into heat with-in those 3 weeks. Speak to your vet about the pros and cons of waiting till she is older before making your decision to wait. |
BTW, females get spayed, males get neutered. |

Ok...thanks to everyone for all the help....I cancelled Teddi's appointment and will wait for 2 weeks, i'll be off work then and i'll be at home with her......:) |
Good that you can spend time at home with Teddi after her spay, and having it done in two weeks. I don't advise waiting longer, also follow what lovetodream advises, have blood work done before her surgery, call your vet to see when blood work should be done. Please keep us posted, and don't worry. Now go give Teddi and extra hug and tons of kissies. |
I had my girl spayed in Dec. Blood work, catheter, and pain meds were on the optional list, but I went with them all even though it costed more cause they were not optional to me :p especially the pain meds lol I had one coworker tell me their vet didn't even offer/mention pain meds as an option. So be sure to let them know that you want the blood work and pain meds (catheter I was 50/50 on but figured why not, better safe than sorry). Blood work will help find any abnormalities that may affect her in surgery or the anesthesia, the catheter is kept in during surgery incase she has a reaction and they need to pump meds into her. Of course, every vet's procedure is different. I'd discuss what they will be doing. After surgery, my girl was big hot mess, yours will be out of it for a bit but that's normal. She may have some blood tinge her urine for the first couple of days but it shouldn't be heavy/bright or getting worse. If it does get worse or has a lot of blood you'll have to get her to the vet quickly. Make sure she doesn't play around, run or jump. She'll be mostly recovered within 2 weeks (when stitches get removed) but will not fully recover until one month has past. |
I am having my girl done next month, my vet with do the laser method which means less healing time and much much easier on my little 2.5 lb girl. She will be a week shy of 6 mo when this happens. I wonder if I should do it sooner? |
