1yr old Yorkie chewing wires??? Hello my 3 1/5 lb boy just messed up my cable tv, Internet and land line phone. 2 months ago I saw he was chewing wires that were dangling and I tried to tape them to the wall and also put bitter apple spray on them. However, I guess I haven't been paying attention and now my cable, etc are out and I found a wire almost completely split. They have to vine and replace it. Question. At what age do Yorkies stop chewing? This is my 2nd boy and I never had the chewing problem with my other boy. Also, any ideas on what I can do as I will ask the cable guy to make sure the wires are clipped tightly to the wall. |
I hate to tell you this but some yorkies are just chewers and never seem to grow out of it. My advice is if a bitter spray doesn't work is to distract him with something that you wouldn't mind him chewing on. Or if worse comes to worst tether/crate him. |
This can be very dangerous. If you can't keep him from the wires try clear deodorant. We had a member who's dog got killed by being electrocuted from chewing on a wire. If you can bust him doing it try to make him scared of doing it by making loud noises. |
My cat does this so he is never left unattended in any room and has to be locked away when we are out. It is dangerous, not only for the animal, but also because your house could burn down! The only thing I have found that works is constant supervision and removal from the area when supervision can't be achieved. Also, of course, correction if you witness the behavior. With respect to correction, you may find it works if you scold and then redirect attention to a proper chewy toy. As a last resort, you can buy covers for wires which are indestructible to dog/cat teeth. This may help for wires which can't be put out of reach for whatever reason. I don't know how much they cost or where you get them from so an internet search may help you more. I was going to look into it when I was told about it by a co-worker but, luckily, my yorkie never developed a taste for wires. |
One of mine was a chewer. He chewed everything, wires and the ends of the rocking chair. The bitter apple didn't work as a matter of fact, I think he liked it. As Taylor said it is very dangerous. They can be burned electrocuted or cause a fire. The only thing that worked for me (and yes, I know it is mean, but I love him) was to daily rub Tabasco sauce on the wires and rocker. After about a week he didn't bother them anymore. I can also see the deodorant working but worry about the aluminum in it. |
Thanks All. Once the cable guy comes and replaces the wire I'll ask him to secure it tightly to the wall with his clip gun. Then I plan on covering the wire with cardboard and tape. I did this in my room where I have the cable wire going through the wall and it is still covered. I think he chewed at this particular wire because it was loose and not secured to the wall with clips like it should have been. I also missed checking it. I don't think he is a big wire chewer, just that he did it early on and then as time went by he would chew here and there and then it broke. he'll be 1yrs old next week so I hope the phase will wear off. |
