general questions about yorkies
 

I've always wanted to own a yorkie since for as long as I can remember, now that I'm older I've been looking at yorkies to get an idea, I have a two year old who also loves them so, it'll still be some time before I can get one so I had some basic questions , I know every yorkie is different so my question is how good are they with kid , are the standard size healthier than the tiny, how easy are they to train . I've been told many conflicting answers and thought I'd go to professionals

As you're a parent, I'm sure you'llunderstand, just like with kids, there's a variety of experiences and opinions on what its like to raise a yorkie, and how is best to raise a yorkie.

Like with kids, I personally believe, people raise what they find acceptable. I had high expectations for my kids, and high expectations for my yorkies, and both met and exceeded them.

I was raised with yorkies in my extended family, from a very young age. I didnt get my own yorkie until My kids were 3 & 5. They were great with our yorkie, Chelsea, and Chelsea adored them. I had very clear & enforced rules for how my kids interacted with Chelsea. No rough handling, no picking her up unless seated on the floor themselves, no bothering her whatsoever when she was in her designated safe space. With Chelsea, I routinely moved her food bowl and took her chews away for a minute or less from the get go. I also had the the kids do the same, so she was used to it and was fine with the kids walking by her food bowl while eating, or being near and moving her chews & toys out of the way, when they were playing with their own toys on the floor. Basically common sense stuff...

I got my current yorkie, ZoE, 3 years after Chelsea passed, and right after my kids both went away to University. While not raised around little kids, ZoE definitely likes them and is drawn to them. If she sees a small child, she clearly wants them to notice her and pet her.

Both dogs potty trained very easily. I pad trained both. Setting clear expectations, and praising and treating when they perform as desired, enforced good potty habits. You have to be consistent...just like with parenting. As I said at the beginning, I believe that people raise what they find acceptable.

I couldn't have said it better myself. My son was 3 when i got Lexi and everything you said it's similar to my experience. Lexi loves my son, who is now 4, and he loves her (especially her kisses)!

Click on "forums" at the top left of the page, right under the yorkie with the halo. Then scroll down and click on the board you want to post on "general yorkshire" discussion? Or health & diet? Which ever you want to start a thread on. Then click on "new thread" on the upper left side above the listing of all the threads.

There not necessarily known as a great dogs with or for kids although my two are but they are larger yorkies. Yorkies are small dogs and can be fearful of the energy and fast moving of kids. Generally a reputable breeder will not let a person who has small children have one of there dogs because a small dog can be so easily hurt by getting dropped or handled to roughly. Yorkies are known to be hard to potty train.

Thanks for all the replys ! I know most small dogs are skittish of kids,lately breeders I've come across have their babies socialized with young kids , I'd like to get a yorkie larger than the tiny due to the fact I have a child .

It's extremely hard to find a reputable breeder.

I grew up with a 5lb yorkie, we were fine with each other. My cousin grew up with 2 teapot yorkies (about 15lbs) and they were bred a few times when she was very young, again they were fine. We were abnormal children though, we were handling ceramics at extremely young ages too. My mom bought a 12lb poodle for me when I was 7.

My yorkie likes kids, she kisses my friend's kid to death when she comes over. My yorkie is almost 2 and my friend's kid is 8.

I didn't have too much trouble with training, I just hard to learn to work with my yorkie's quirks, for example she needs privacy to go potty. Yorkies can be hard to train because they're very smart and stubborn.

As for size, I like the 5-10lb range. I'd probably aim 7-15 if I had a kid though. My yorkie is 7lbs, she's small, but not so small that she's super fragile. I didn't like it when she was under 4lbs.

chester is good with kids and he is a bigger yorkie, I made sure he was around them as a puppy, and they can be a problem to potty train, a lot of small dogs are, they are stubborn and very smart
