Apparently I have 2 yorkies?? LOL I joined here because of my yorkie puppy Clark, but I thought I'd share something funny. I have another dog, Maple, that we've always termed a 'mystery' dog. She was tiny when we got her at 12 weeks. She's currently 3.8 lbs at nearly 2 years. We were told that she was a poodle/maltese, but I knew there was another breed in there, as she had erect ears and a stiffer coat than a poodle or maltese (I've had both of those before). She's mostly all black with a bit of white on her chest and paws. Her brother was basically yorkie colors, with a poodle/maltese coat and floppy ears. So I thought she might have some yorkie in her somewhere, but most vets told me they thought she was more chihuahua or pomeranian than anything else. I noticed once we got Clark, though, that Maple and him were a lot alike. Same fun loving personality, same playfulness, same ears, eyes and nose. I kept thinking maybe there was a LITTLE bit of yorkie in her, somewhere. Anyway it was driving me crazy so I got a DNA test done on her. And the results are: less than 30% poodle/maltese - the rest is all yorkie! I was thinking there was a little bit of yorkie in her and here the results say over 70% yorkie! Too funny. Now I have 2! Just wanted to share. :D |
Well then I guess another round of congrats are in order for new non mystery dog lol. Welcome Clark and maple. |
How exciting that you got a DNA test and lol- that your little babe is infact a Yorkie! :) pics please! :) |
Oh cool!! You have another yorkie, and didn't even have to buy another dog :D! |
Neat! Can you post pics of her? :) |
Pictures Here's Maple - who is no longer my 'mystery' dog! I can't seem to figure out how to post an image here, lol. All my files are too big. So here are some links instead. http://s7.postimg.org/qb7o4utnv/DSC_0374.jpg http://s22.postimg.org/gnffshs9t/DSC_7429_2.jpg |
OMG except for the coloring she looks exactly like a yorkie. She's precious. |
Maple is so gorgeous....I love her dark coat..:animal36 |
Wow, Her face is so like a Yorkie and I love her black coat |
Thanks motinot, yavenay and teasell. You know, it's funny, when we'd take Maple out we always have people stop us and ask us if she was part yorkie. One lady was absolutely trying to convince me Maple was a yorkie "She looks EXACTLY like my yorkie, same personality, same tilt of the head, EVERYTHING the only difference is she's black!"I wasn't so convinced. But apparently those people were right, lol. She actually has short hair right now, not like in the pictures, and she looks quite poodle-like with short hair (her poodle DNA is 10-20%). which is a big reason why I never thought she had mostly yorkie DNA. Maybe a bit, but she does poodle things, like fetching. Anyone know if yorkies are good at fetching? Maple is a star at fetching. Anyway. Thanks for the compliments on Maple. We are blessed to have her and Clark. They ARE cute, lol. We can't get enough of their cuteness. :D |
Hi, congratulations, and welcome to YorkieTalk. How cool you had the DNA test done. Maple does have a Yorkie look, and she is beautiful...gorgeous in black. I have one Yorkie who lives to play fetch, so I would say fetch can be a Yorkie game. I personally think it is the dog's choice which games it likes, though. LOL |
My Teddi is great at fetching and drops the item at my feet when i tell her to 'give'......If i tell her 'go fetch your baby'...she runs off in to the kitchen and comes back with her cuddle toy :D |
Bonnie loves to play fetch! She will play until YOU are tired. She always brings it back and puts it in my hand so I can throw it again. 😊 Unfortunately, we are having a bit of nipping going on when she gets excited...working to break that habit. |
she is so pretty! Such a sweet face! |
Thank you everyone. And thanks for letting me know fetch can be a yorkie thing too! Even the poodle mix I grew up with that was obsessed with fetching her tennis ball had to be taught at first. Maple just one day rolled her mini-tennis ball at me and stared at me. I threw it, she brought it back and dropped it. I didn't have to teach her anything, lol. I just always thought it meant she had a lot of poodle in her, but in retrospect, our maltese poodle mixes had zero interest in fetching, so maybe it is the yorkie in Maple :). Cool. |

I think fetching is something some like to do. I think about 7 weeks old is the 'time' to 'teach' fetching, but I have even had kitties that loved to fetch...feral kitties that were not taught anything at the time. I also had a Yorkie/Poo mix and a Doxi/Poo mix and the Yorkie/Poo grew too prissy to fetch any more, but the Doxi/Poo never learned...or cared...LOL...to bring back the ball. |
I wish they had a an actual line of black yorkies like that! Absolutely beautiful! Why can't we have black yorkies?!? |
Maple is just adorable with her beautiful black coat! :) Our Sophie loves to fetch, too. She knows all her squeaky toys by name and will get whichever one we ask for out of her toy box to play fetch. :D |
HAHA Opium88 - that would be cool. I think yorkies in any color would be the cutest things ever. Think of all the possibilities.... Jackie, that is amazing about Sophie. Smart doggie! Thanks for the compliments everyone. I'm really glad to know that fetching is quite common with yorkies. That gives me hope for Clark (lol, he shows zero interest in fetching. He's more interested in chasing Maple when SHE is fetching, lol.) |
I'm usually on a rant to get people NOT to breed their dogs, cause lord knows there's more than we need out there, but I think the world would be a better place if you bred her. I want a black yorkie when I grow up |
We thought about breeding her...for a second (mostly for ourselves - for more free, cute tiny puppies to keep so they wouldn't have been 'out there'). But when we got her we discovered she has a molera and were advised to not breed her. The molera is why the vets we saw thought she was part chihuahua. And she's pretty tiny - under 4 lbs - so we decided against it. So...I'm really sorry about that. lol. Someone else will have to come up with a black yorkie :) |

The Shep/Labs lived with me because 'the pound' was not an option I was willing to allow their previous owners to re-home them to. They were sweet, smart, very trainable, good with children...people, in general...got along well with other dogs...just really great dogs. You are right, though...any color dog with Yorkie size, features, and personality would be a sure winner in my book. I am happy you shared little Maple with us. Maple is a beauty, a little darling, and I love black kitties and puppies, but I do also really love the blue and gold (tan) Yorkshire Terrier look a whole big old bunch! LOL. |
