Ok to spay during heat cycle? My friend has an appointment to get her two girls spayed and now the smaller one just went into heat. Is it ok for the spay to continue (the vet doing the spay says yes) or should she wait to have it done? She's nervous because she's heard horror stories of excessive bleeding in the uterus leading to the death of the dog. I don't blame her for being nervous, but it'd be nice to give her some solid advise. Thanks in advance! |

My vet wouldn't do it until the heat is over because of the bleeding issue, I would wait a while. |
I personally would not. They are usually fine, but I just wouldn't take that chance. |

My vet gave the same advice, to wait at least a month or more after the heat cycle ends. It is less complicated and risky surgery then after bleeding and swelling are gone. |
Perfect, thanks everyone! She has decided to wait (as per her gut feeling on the situation) until the heat cycle is over for both dogs (they usually go one after the other and she wants them both "down" at the same time.) |
My Maple was spayed while she was in heat. I wasn't sure I should have it done but my vet convinced me to do it and said that he's never had any complications from doing it during heat. I went ahead and did it and Maple had no issues at all. It was more costly though. |
It can be a lot more risky. I would not do it. |
Many years ago, when I had my Siberian Husky spayed while she was in heat, my vet cussed me out afterwards, because her internal organs were engorged with blood, and the procedure was more difficult and dangerous. Definitely not recommended. |
My vet wouldn't do it during a heat cycle. A very dependable breeder also told me to wait for about two months after a heat to let everything get back to normal. Lily had her first heat in December and we are waiting until March to get her fixed. |
Just imagine what you have....sexual organs engorged with blood, building up linings in the uterus to support the possible introduction of embryos. Unless it is an emergency, it is best to wait until after the pup goes thru her heat cycle and everything has the opportunity to "get back to normal". Everything should be "stabilized" and back to normal within a couple of months after her heat cycle ends....this is what my vet goes by, and every reproduction specialist I have conversed with has said the same thing. |
I have read you should wait at least a month after they go ut. My pomeranian had emergency surgery and had wetting issues. |
