Biting the Carpet...HELP!!!
 

Poppy WILL NOT stop biting the carpet!!


I have a spray but when I spray it on a bit she just moves onto another.
It's not a boredom thing, I can be playing with her and while running to get the ball she will become distracted with biting the rug. I distract her again but before long she is back at it.


I can't be down playing every min of the day (although usually someone is!!) and she just bites chunks out of it. She is never left alone in the room, if I am out of the house she is in the crate and there are 4 of us in the house so she is never alone in any room that she is in.


I'm almost positive she has sore teeth, I have many chew toys for her. I freeze the kong and give her it, run her rope toy under water and freeze that too.


Tonight I had enough and rolled the rug away, she actually bit the edges that were sticking out!!! I don't like to have it all rolled away because she slips on the wood when running.


She is wild at night, playing constantly between about 7-10 but this happens during the day too...I don't know what else to do :confused:

Teddy did/does that! He's almost 5 months and he mostly stopped! It's a phase you just have to be firm and let her know that's bad! I do a firm no and clap which startles him away! It's a really expensive area rug so I'm trying to save it lol! Good luck :)

Luckily this isn't that expensive and we will be getting a new one once she has grown a bit.


I have been working on the NO command recently! She doesn't take much notice tbh, she has been so good with everything else I trained her with. Maybe I should have made NO a priority over "go get the ball":rolleyes:

Haha good luck! Teddy looks at me like I'm an idiot then gives me puppy eyes when I say no! Or he runs laps around the house!

My Bonnie does this sometimes. She has tons of toys but she will still try to chew the carpet and mine is NOT an area rug. I have taught her NO and LEAVE IT, and she listens pretty well. She is in a play pen if I can't watch her. Good luck to us all!😬

I have no advice, because Clark is doing that too. He's 16 weeks old and I just noticed he has just started to do this. I had bought a new machine washable throw rug for the entrance 2 weeks ago and this week he shredded the entire corner of it. I haven't tried the bitter spray yet, as I hate it (I can taste it when I spray it, even if I'm careful) so I'd like to see if there are any other tricks. Clark still doesn't understand no or leave it consistently.

Sounds like a typical puppy behaviour, have a look at clicker training I think it helps them focus and it's never too early to start, once the have a little training I think it makes it easier to distract them when they are doing something they shouldn't be. Lol.

Thankfully, it is a phase as long as she doesn't become habituated to this behavior - as a kind of nervous displacement behavior she resorts to in the future whenever she's bored, stressed, uncertain, etc. I'd try keeping up the different distractions and especially try to prevent her from ever starting the biting process - distract first - when you can - realize it's very hard to predict a dog's behavior but actually, once you study them for a couple of days, it's easier than you would think. A clicker could work to distract her but so can a high screech or any number of odd sounds from you, a squeaky toy(during puppyhood I almost always have one stuck in a pocket), whistles, etc. & then toss a toy or treat or anything across the floor to send her off after that thing rather than biting the carpet.

Her obedience training should include teaching her the "Leave it" command so that soon all you will have to say is "Leave it" to stop her when she's showing signs of wanting to or already begins carpet biting, then toss the toy, etc., for distraction. "Leave it" is a fun command to teach and the dogs love learning how to control their impulse for instant gratification in order to get an even better pay-off, the "Take it", along with your smiling praise and celebration with her for getting it all right - a much bigger reward in the end.
