How long do you crate your yorkies for? Just curious, what was longest time you kept your yorkie crated for? This doesn't include if you crated them and you were still at home. I am wondering if you had to go somewhere and put them in the crate, what is the longest you left them in there for? |

In a large playpen, with food, water, bed and all the lovely bits and pieces sounds like a more comfy, cosy, kinder option, to me... |
I crate Poppy when not in the house, on a Monday she is left from about 8.30am - 12 noon and that is the longest. On a Friday she is left for only 2 hours. I leave water in the crate, its one for a large dog and she is tiny so she has a mat at one end she sleeps on, a couple of toys, a puppy pad and a bowl of water. |
When I crate my dogs during the day, I always have water available in their crate - no matter the size of the crate. One never knows - plans go astray, accidents happen. At home I have larger crates that my dogs can move around in. I have crated up to 6hrs (rarely) but usually my max I work with is around 4hrs. |
Much, much longer than anybody else on this thread... They always have water if over 1/2 hour. |
We'll I crate when I'm not home. So 700am to 230 during the week typically. |
I don't crate at all bc mine hate the crate. |

Are you talking about leaving the dog in a small crate without a pee pad? I have never left a puppy or dog in one of those crates except for transport purposes. A small pen with a pee pad area can be used for several hours. Perhaps a trained adult dog can be left in a crate that is big enough to stand up in and turn around in for a couple of hours but no longer. Dogs that have to be left alone for several hours need to have an area they can move around in and a potty area. Very nice pens are available for pups that are not trained enough to be left on their own. |
The reason I ask is cause my boyfriend wants me to go away with him and his friends for the night from 7pm to 8am. He says everyone else is leaving their dog crated for the night - of course, all those dogs are at least 50lbs. I normally do leave a pee pad in the crate with fresh food and water but neither will use the pad plus we have been using the crate to teach Geno how to be potty trained so I would prefer he not associate the crate with the bathroom. I would feel comfortable about a pen set up but our floors are hardwood and with Geno still learning, I already know his pee will be no where near the pad haha I'm just super frustrated cause he makes me feel like I'm the only one who thinks leaving a 4lb and 4.7lb dog crated for 12-13 hours is bad. Edit: The crate is a medium sized crate and my 2 get crated together. |
I'm no expert but I would say that's far too long. Just in terms of the toilet, eating and general walking about and people company! I also feel like you are not going to enjoy yourself away, you don't sound too keen on the idea of leaving them anyway and are probably going to worry about it all night!! Is there no one who can keep them overnight for you? Hope you get something sorted :) |
I do not crate any longer. Sophie is so good that I leave her loose. Let me correct myself Sophie is a good little girl unless you leave a napkin or paper towel laying around while I am gone. Then we come home to it shredded all over. Lol! She is a little toot! |
12-13 hours is super long. I crate when I'm away but normally no longer than 6 hours. Even in extreme circumstances, it has been no longer than eight hours but that would be unplanned and rare. I would ask if someone could look after your doggy for the night like parents or another friend? Bigger dogs have bigger bladders but, even so, I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving a dog that long. Maybe midnight to seven - but 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. just seems kinda wrong... |
I guess I would look for a sitter. I have gone extended hours but don't like to leave the dog crated over night alone. |
