How often should I bathe a 10 week old puppy? My family got our yorkie puppy about a week ago. We are wondering how often we should bathe him. I've read on yorkie forums on the internet that he should be bathed once every two weeks or so, but my mother and sister think thats too often. How often would you recommend? |
Honestly, I think it's more of your preference right now. I've seen members here that vary when it comes to bathing. It can be anywhere from every week to every month. In my case, neither of my furbutts seems to have any skin issues (like allergies) or stink so I bathe them every month or if lazy, every other month. I do wipe them down with baby wipes and spritz conditioner on them every day though. I've also started using "waterless shampoo" in between baths. I'm sure others will be chiming in with good advice! |
I like to bathe my puppies often so they get used to it- every week . But we do live in a warm climate... and they often swim for at least 6 months of the year. |
I do my stinker once a week cuz he's quite a boy (getting into stuff) but when we first got him I did every 2 weeks until he was 3 months! |
I plan on doing it once every month or 2 months. I wipe her down every day and clean all her face. No warm climates or anything here! |
In the winter time when we don't go outside, I bathe Dutch about every month or so. In the summertime it is more often as Dutch can get into some very stinky thing on our walks. |
I do every week but that's just my preference. I made the mistake of rarely bathing a dog I had once as she was strictly indoors and she is now afraid of water lol. |
Mine at 10 weeks kept stepping in and playing in poo and pee so she was bathed daily for a bit with a mild shampoo. She still doesn't care about stepping in waste like my oldest, so when it happens, she knows the drill. Not had any problems with her coat or skin as a result. My oldest gets a bath once a week and when we go for walks, her paws are cleaned as she sleeps in our bed. |
My Clark had a habit of peeing on himself, or stepping in his waste, so he endured many baths, several times a week, until the last couple of weeks (he's currently 16 weeks) where he seems to be 'getting it' now, lol. Normally I bathe my dogs once every 2 weeks or so (winter time, less than that, summer time, more than that) |
ZoE gets a bath every week. She sleeps in my bed, so I want a clean dog! Sometimes, due to a hectic schedule, I've pushed it to two weeks, but never longer (other than the month she was spayed). |
I do my lil gal weekly. I use a mild organic puppy shampoo and rinse well and condition. |

As adults my girls get bathed once every week so they are clean and smell good, since they sleep on my pillow, and spend a lot of time on my lap. |
I bathed Gracie weekly from the time I first got her. This helps the pup to adjust to the grooming they are going to need all their lives. You do need to be careful about what products you bathe with though. You cannot bathe that frequently using a shampoo with sulfate and other chemicals in it or you will strip the skin and coat and your pup will get itchy dry skin. Some will react to these chemicals even if you use them less frequently. Look for products that are ALL natural and not products that advertise just one or two natural ingredients. Read ingredient lists. Usually sulfate and other chemicals are pretty high up on the list. Daily grooming and weekly baths while your pup is young will make it much easier for both of you when the hair grows long. Even if you plan to use a groomer he will still need day to day coat care. |
While we are on the topic, how many of you trim their hair yourself? I always had my Maltese professionally done but I am wondering if I should try to learn. |

If you are unsure of wherever you are now taking your dog considering home grooming may be a good idea. They sell table top grooming tables for a very reasonable price and they help get the job done with a much more professional look. |
