New to this First of all just want to say I'm completly new to the dog world, although my girlfriend is pretty experienced. We recently got a yorkie pup that was abandoned. She is around 9 weeks old now and we've had her a week and a half. I pretty much started house training her straight away, she's done very well so far. Just 2 poops in the house. Her second accident actually just came last night, and I have to say I felt very defeated, because she hadn't gone in the house for over a week. There are still have pee accidents but she also mostly goes outside for that as well. I am teaching her complete outside training for the toilet as we don't want her going anywhere in the house. She seems to eat reasonably well, Ive made her some scrambled eggs also. Dosnt drink an awful lot but this has been improving. Sorry if I'm babbling. She sleeps on and off for most of her day, sometimes that worries me a little but I understand that it's fairly normal for them to sleep a lot. Just looking for advice and guidance and how to precede with her training and general care . Thank you |
Hi and welcome to YT - glad you found us :). Wow, she sounds incredibly smart -- to be already learning potty training at this very young age, that's actually amazing how far she's come already. Well done, both of you! Dogs sleep a lottttttt, lol. They sleep way more than we probably expect. What a life, eh? :p |
Be sure to make an appointment with the vet to get her thoroughly checked out. She will need to get her shots to help keep her healthy. She sounds adorable. |
Welcome to YT! She is still pretty young to have complete control of herself. But if you are persistent and consistent she will get it. The general rule of thumb is to not give the pup free run of the house until they have pretty good potty control. That is less frustrating for everyone. Good luck. Sounds like you are doing a great job! |
Thanks everyone. Yeah she has done amazingly well when you think about it. I would like to get her to a vet asap to get her checked out again. She is booked in for her second round of shots on the 20th of this month. She just seems to have been sleeping a lot today, not the same energy she had. But she seems to be eating, drinking and going to the toilet. Think I'll feel better when she sees the vet. |
I would like to suggest two books that are so valuable and informative in the care and raising of your Yorkie. My favorite, "Yorkies For Dummies" will get you started...."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owner's Guide" is also a great addition to your Yorkie library. Congratulations on your new puppy!! |
Few struggling blocks last couple of days. She's had a few more accidents, one on the bed :(. But keep having to tell myself she's only 10 weeks old. She's a victim of her own success lol |
Sounds like my little baby, Kimchi. When I first got her she had an amazing pee-poo pad skillz, but when they are raised long enough by momma and littermates they learn to not "go" in or near where they eat/sleep. They also have less control over it so sometimes if they are not close enough to the pads they'll just go to the nearest comfortable area to do it at. She gradually got worse as she got older cause she kept either going elsewhere or missed the pad. But now she has specific spots she's learn to go at but we're slowly working her to go outside. So yea, just keep consistent with her, it took our past yorkies about a year to fully be trained not to go in the house. And every so often there would still be accidents ^^;; with our male it was marking and our female at the time has incontinence issues. |
