New Puppy with skin sore! Hi I am a new Yorkie Mommy to Charlotte, she is a tiny little thing (1 lb 2 oz at 11 weeks) I rescued her from a puppy mill... but I wish she was bigger.. I noticed that she had something on her right shoulder and I though it was dried hair sticking together.. So I gave her a bath and it really was a scab...It fell off and left an open wound so I rushed her the the vet hospital at 8:00 at night. They said it was probably from when she had her last shots. They did not seem to concerned so they put her on antibiotics and a antibiotic cream and said to bring her back in 5 days for her next set of shots and a recheck... Has this happened to any of your puppy? Thanks Charlottes Mommy |
O.o I must say that doesn't sound right. Maybe it's just my experience, but all my doggies had shots in their rear not front/shoulders (I only know of "up the nose" for certain vaccines). If the scab was that bad to go to the vet, I'm assuming it was a fair size too. I also don't see how that could be from the "shots", but since it was a puppy mill I can guess the needles/place they were kept wasn't clean/sterile enough. Either way it does sound that she needed antibiotics anyways. Better safe than sorry. I guess you only have two choices, wait it out and let them check her again or find another vet for a different opinion. Not saying they are terrible vets, I just find it odd they say it's from her last shots when with a sore it could also come from rubbing or long term pressure on a spot that could come from being caged. And if she is from a puppy mill, you can't be 100% sure she has even had any or all shots. Again, I could be wrong but that's just my opinion. ^^; |
I know the vet put her on antibiotic ointment, but I had really, really good luck healing a fairly nasty puncture wound on my own hand by using coconut oil. As far as nasty, I actually punctured my hand with an old, raw beef bone that I was trying to break down a bit smaller to give to a toy poodle. Needless to say, he enjoyed his full sized, seasoned with my blood large beef bone. lol The puncture wound healed without incident or infection in less than a week, and I was back to sawing/breaking raw bones in 10 days. (a bit more carefully, though lol) Maybe you could apply a little on her wound in between the ointment treatments. Coconut oil has natural anti-microbial benefits. I was told that it can even stop or reduce viral reproduction if adminstered soon enough after infection. Best wishes with your little lady! |
They put the DPP in the shoulder but I have never seen it get infected. However, puppy mills are breeding grounds for infection. |
I haven't had this happen and it seems a bit odd that it could create such a noticeable sore as the needle is only, well, a small opening. Odd. I do hope it heals quickly! Welcome to YT :)! |
Never had either one of mine get scabs from a shot. Only time is if they get into a rough play time or something of the sort. I keep an ointment called Vetericyn as part of my "first aid kit" for my furbutts. It's really good for minor cuts, burns, sores, etc...  Amazon.com : Vetericyn Wound & Skin Care Hydrogel... Since your furbutt's on antibiotics, as long as you don't notice signs of illness, I think she should be fine. Also, you said she'll be getting "a set" of shots? How many will she get? Being so small, it might be better to spread the shots a bit. Magnus (16 lbs) does fine with him but Zoey (5.5 lbs) gets so out of it whenever she gets a shot. I usually spread them about a week or so apart so she won't be overwhelmed. Good luck and hope your girl heals quick! |
