Treats used when praising/training... First off... Is anyone using real peanut butter in a kongo, or the peanut butter in a can they make???? We have liver treats for when he goes potty outside... and then we have some peanut butter biscuits and some other biscuits.... For praising when he's quiet in pen, and when we're teaching him sit, come, etc... I read on here that someone uses stix??? I've seen tons of stix... but not sure what to use.. I know they CANNOT have rawhide, or pig stuff... but cow hooves are okay... what kind of stix are people feeding? What kind of treats do you find that you and your pup like better and do the trick? |

Not to be a total noob or anything but why can't they have rawhide? I mean, I know it's bad for dogs to have it once it gets really small because they can choke but is there a danger to them chewing on it?! :confused: I use little square liver treats for when they potty outside and I use these little "all natural wheat" heart shaped treats for when they do tricks. |
from what i'm told they can't digest the rawhide well.. when my sister got her pup, the people she got him from gave him rawhide, my sis has spent 3,000 on vet bills because it was in his intestines and had tons of probs.... |
Also I've been told (but not sure of the truth) that you can't be sure where the leather came from, e.g., leather from old car seats. It is also true that formaldahye may have been used in the processing of some of the leathers - which could be very bad for dog. I suspect however, that the main danger is the rawhide getting stuck in the intestines - especially in our small little babies. |
As far as rawhide goes: Things that aren't digestable can cause tummy problems, choking, blockages, etc. Yorkies can't handle things that lots of big dogs can. Re: Peanut Butter I get the good stuff, unsalted. You have to keep it refrigerated, but I even put it in the Kong and then freeze the Kong - makes it last longer. There are too many preservatives in Skippy & Jif. I also think it tastes better. |

I found this recipe from a doggie website (can't remember the site, sorry). Place a teaspoon of peanut butter on a microwave safe dish. Microwave it for a minute or so until the peanut butter is melted. Then mix in some vanilla or plain yogurt. Place the mixture in the freezer (i used a small ice cream scooper and made it into little balls before freezing it). the result is a tasty, healthy little treat that you can stuff into a kong or just award by itself. I also placed a small spoonful of it into the kong and froze it and Nikko went crazy!! It kept him occupied for a while and he was so happy with his tasty new treat!! :) |
For us, Joey's treats are determined by the circumstances. Under normal circumstances, he is quite willing to "work" - follow commands - for plain kibble. However, I give "high value" treats for certain things. Like, when he was potty trainging, always for coming when called, when it's something he's hesitant to do, when he has to "leave it" or "drop it" are examples. High value treats here are small cubes of cheese or leftover meat. I rotate to keep it exciting. |

Someone on here told me about plain old cheerios. I am pround to say that I am now the owner of about $40.00 worth of worthless expensive treats - they want cheerios! She's 3 mos old 2 days ago and she comes, sits, and pees on the pads because of cheerios. YEAAAAAAAAA. Now for stay, pooping on pads, etc.... oh, well it all takes time. Even my 10 year old traded in pupperoni for cheerios. |
