Hmmm... Hey YT!~ I'm a new soon-to-be yorkie owner (next month, wee!) and I've been so nervous about all of it! The best way to housebreak him (Inside with a crate and pads? Outside?), how I can go to school 2 days a week and have someone watch him... I'm scared out of my mind, but I'm really excited for the journey. Not really sure I'm looking forward to the late night potty breaks, though. ;) Oh well. I'm getting my boy from a breeder who has a pair that are both AKC registered, and then she told me mine was APRI registered... I have no idea what that means. And I'm kinda thinking maybe I should have done some research. But I'm already committed to him-- I really like him lots! @_@ I've read just about every stickied thread on here 3 or 4 times over, but I still don't know if I'm ready! Or if I ever will be! >-< Hope to be here throughout it all though!~ Thanks for reading ! O: |
Hi and welcome to YT :)!! CONGRATS on your almost new baby....I'm sure he is just precious. My kiddos are pad trained, but if I had it to do over again...I'd do outside-only training for sure! Too late now for us though. |
Hi and welcome! I have a 13 week old and I am training her to go outside. We are trying the bells for the door, although I only got those on Saturday. I'm sure you will figure out what works best for you😀 |
Congrats on your little one. As for potty training, Dutch is trained to do both. She goes outside and she also uses the potty pad. This works for me because I hate getting up in the middle of the night for potty breaks and I don't have to worry about her while I'm at work. Plus I hate cold weather, she on the other hand could care less. The main reason I decided to include potty pad training is because I live alone and I also work. I didn't want her to have to hold it until I got home from work but I also didn't want her to be confined in an expen all day. Fortunately it has worked out for me. I know some Yorkies will only do one or the other. I started with outside training first. I didn't want her to be confused. Then gradually as the weather started getting cold, I trained her on the potty pads. I thought it would be too confusing for her but it's not. |
Welcome to YT!!!!! I think it depends on how energetic and diligent you are with potty training. I see you live in OR where it rains alot? If you don't mind taking him out to potty in the rain, cold, hot, and whatever unpleasant weather you might have, I think it's better to potty train for outside. Will definitely keep your home cleaner. Will you be caring for him by yourself or do you have others living with you? If you have other ppl living with you, it's really important they stick to the rules and be consistent with training. You'll get a lot of good info/support on this forum so never be shy about sharing your concerns, brag, pictures, etc about your boy! Congrats! |
The biggest issue with not being AKC registered is he could be a mix and reputable breeders in the US only use AKC because it's the only reputable registery. I prefer having my dog trained to go outside but there are times when a puppy pad would works better. It is really up to you. |
