New Puppy Cough
 
Hello everyone, I just got a new yorkie puppy. He is 5 months old. My question is he sometimes does this cough noise. It is not really a cough more like a fast hack noise like a person clearing his throat. It last like a second. Sometimes he will do it once and he is done sometimes two hacks. He does it everyday though. I took him to two different vets and they just look at me a
nd say if he is acting fine and it does not bother him then he is okay. A friend told me about this site and told me you where very informative on here. Anyone know what it could be. Not kennel cough, like I said not a honking cough or reverse sneeze just a fast hack when he is running or excited to see me come home from work. Thanks everyone

Welcome to the club of the mysterious hacking cough. There are a few of us on here whose pups do the same thing. Lexi does it mostly after drinking water. Sometimes when going for a walk with her harness and she pulls she was hack also. Lexi is now 1 and she has done this since I got her at 13 weeks old. The vet doesn't seem too concerned either, but said it does sound tracheal. It hasn't gotten any worse, but it does happen every day. My first thought was collapsed trachea, and the vet said it could turn into that one day, but it's too early to tell at this point. Mindy10 on here also has a pup that does this.

hmm, he may be getting slightly congested suddenly and is clearing his throat or perhaps he's having allergies? Another thing might be that he has got a little something sort of stuck in his throat that he perhaps breathed in? My girl is like a vacuum sometimes and she'll get the hairs from our other dogs up her nose and throat. Could be something along the floors that's irritating his throat, maybe try doing a good clean sweep and see if that helps.

Thanks for getting back to me. A lady I work with told me her dog does it and she has been doing it for 9 years now. I have never had a yorkie before so I was not sure if it was a yorkie thing. Hopefully someone has an answer for me

Thanks lunaberry. Im recently divorced so my house probably does need a good cleaning!! I will say he is always chewing on something in my house so maybe he is irritating his throat.

I hate to say it, but you probably wont get an answer to this. Mindy and I have asked about this (more than once) in threads on here and have yet to find a definite answer. Mostly, could be this, or this, or this. My neighbor had a bichon that coughed after drinking his whole life and it never got any worse. He never had any type of diagnosis. I even showed a video to my vet and she didn't have a definite answer for me, just "sounds tracheal, wait and see". Good luck, and welcome to YT!

Yup mine does the same thing. Three different vets can not figure it out and are not concerned. I even gave the last vet this video and she said not to worry. Is this what your dog sounds like?

Thanks ladies. yes Mindy10 that is exactly how it sounds. There seems to be alot of people on this site so maybe other people will come forward that have dogs that do it. Thanks again for the video, maybe I can show my vet that.

Since it happens when excited, it could also be a sudden episode of reflux/regurgitation...does he swallow afterward or lick?

I did notice little yellow bile in his bed this morning. Then he was just chewing his toy and did the hack noise. I wonder if it could be acid reflux related

Yup...that sounds like reflux to me. Regurgitation due to reflux is when it just basically comes right up without warning (whereas w/ true vomiting, there would be hacking/heaving then vomiting).

First line treatment is very basic for reflux in dogs - vets just recommend regular Pepcid, at the right dose. Your vet may even give you the right dose over the phone.

thanks williesmom. How about diet. Should he eat certain food for acid reflux. I read low protien low fat diet. You seem to know a lot could you recommend a food. Thanks

Welcome to YT. If you are only noticing the bile in the morning. He may need a little snack before bed. His belly may be empty. These guys have little bellies. Mine eat early in the morning and are usually starved by dinner.

As for the hacking...mine hack after drinking water and Sissy will eat any thing she finds on the floor, hair, lint and then she hacks.
