Reaction to Vaccinations Wondering if any other yorkies out there have had a bad reaction to their vaccinations/shots? Holly is almost 4 months old, the the first set of shots we had at the vet she was quite ill afterwards: threw up, lathargic, in pain and sore and wouldn't let us pick her up. It lasted at least 24 hours. Today she had her second set of shots at the vet, I told him about her bad reaction to the first set so he only gave her one shot and then a steroid to help her feel better. She is not herself tonight, she's not playing, she seems warm and a bit out of it. Has anyone else experienced this with their yorkie, is it somewhat normal/okay? Thank you, Worried Mom! :aimeeyork |
Hi and welcome to YT :). Some dogs do have reactions...in that case, it's always good to give them some Benadryl about 45mins before the shot, and a steroid shot is also a good idea. What shots were given at both these visits? For this pup, I'd be only getting one shot at a time (which is what I do for all my dogs, btw)...and I most def wouldn't give any non-core vaccines. Vacs My breeder suggests that vacs be given one at a time, if not required at once. Then you can determine which vac caused the reaction. Seems good advice. I have not gotten the Bordetella shot or Lyme shot for BB. She is 1 year old. Star died at eight yo and I got her every shot in the book! She had a collapsing trachea and bad allergies. |

Vacs Check with your vet for dosage. L&BB (trying to get my avatar changed to BB's photo) She is so CUTE and does not have a "docked" tail, which I love. Shows how happy she is wagging a long beautiful tail! |
Mine always feels kinda cruddy after a shot and just wants to sleep. Most of the time if you hit where the shot was given to pick her up she will cry. This is even when it's an antibiotic or any kind of shot. |
Lexi just had her checkup and two shots. She had bordetella and Lepto. We have given her shots individually over a 6 week period of time previously. Vet said if they are around water or puddles where other animals are, it's probably a good idea to get the Lepto. We have a pond, raccoons, squirrels, coyotes, and such. Not often and we have a solid board fence, but She is around other dogs on walks and when we leave her for vacation in someone else's home. I really talked with the vet about both of these vaccines before giving them to her. He recommended hanging out for a bit after just to make sure there were no issues. She was fine for a couple hours afterward, but then got real sleepy and mellow. But next morning she was back to her normal self. Makes me pretty nervous whenever she gets shots. Next year when she is due for the dhlp or whatever it is, he will do a titer test to see if she still has immunization in her body. If she does, no shots. I'd be ok with that. But two days ago, this five pounder did pretty good. |

Yes, Dexter reacted the same way to his vaccinations. Fever, lethargy and pain on being picked up. Our vet did the same thing as yours and split them up for the next series. So for some pups, yeah, it seems to fall under normal reaction. It lasted 36-48 hours for us. Also, hi and welcome, I'm in Winnipeg too :) |
