Buying new pup. HELP! Newbie.

Thanks for letting me join the group.

I recently lost my 2 year old Yorkie, Barry, in a tragic freak accident.

I have been trying to find a new pup. I'm in Australia and there aren't a lot of breeders and many have said they will only have new litters in December.

I have found two in New Zealand. The breeder is new the breeding, only 6 years but she's working with a breeder with 40 years experience.

I've never bought a pup from overseas and it's kind of terrifying. Also the pup has been desexed and tail docked. I'm not sure if that's good or bad because they were desexed so young.

The breeder is pushing me to decide, apparently they have others wanting the pups. They are 15 weeks old, so I'm not sure why she hasn't sold them already, but whatever.

I'm feeling torn. All the advice says I should see the pups, play with them etc. and all that, but it's just not possible in Australia. She's sent some photos but I just can't tell if they look ok or not, their ears seem big. I just don't want something that's timid or fearful. I think maybe I just haven't asked enough questions??

I'm lost. I'm trying to make sure I buy a dog I will love as much as the one I lost... and I know I will, but in a different way. I just don't seem to be able to feel good about this, so many unknowns, and they are so far away.

Am I being unreasonable? Should I be worried? Any thoughts would be wonderful.

I'm so very sorry about your loss, you must be just heartbroken. I hope you'll be able to find another furkid to love and fill your heart.

As for this breeder in NZ, I almost feel like your gut is telling you no...? It doesn't necessarily mean it's the wrong breeder, but maybe you're feeling too rushed or something..? I don't know. But I'd maybe wait a bit if it doesn't feel just right.

First Welcome to YT. My condolences on your loss. I am a tad geographically challenged but would the puppy fly by airplane and IN CABIN to you in Australia? Just kind of wondering how long that flight would be?
Also I kindof know you are in your summer months, so heat is a factor with air travel. I would be very leery unless the puppy is flying in cabin for the trip to you.


In terms of de-sexing very young puppies (which yours is), is not a practice I would engage in or support.


Have you been able to research this breeder? BBB reviews, Yelp and what other on line review mechanisms are available to you in Australia.


Has she provided you with referrals or references, and have you checked them out?


I do believe it is best to visit the breeder in her home, how-ever it is not always possible to do so. Videos and pics, and lots of investment of time getting to know one another will have to suffice.

I how-ever in reading your post a couple of times, concur with Wylies Mom, in that you seem very unsure and hesitant. Maybe if you have screened this breeder thoroughly and are still hesitant, it is much better to wait than be sorry.


And December is not so far away...... why rush a purchase decision?

I agree with the other post. The breeder should NOT rush you, not a good sign. And you're not able to see the breeder or the puppy in person. December is not that long, it will go by fast and give you more time to research. Steer clear of this breeder.

Thank you all for the responses. I think you are all right. I have not bought the pup. I am going to wait a while. My gut just kept saying it wasn't right.
