Which food is best to feed yorkies? I am new to this group.. I have two yorkies Chloe and Josie just curious on what food is the best for a yorkie? |
This is like walking into a football stadium full of people, and asking what is the best religion to believe in! There are a million and one thoughts and beliefs and allegience to a million different dog foods, and we all have our preferences. I have fed Royal Canin to all my dogs, since the late '70's....I like the science based research, evidenced based results I have gotten feeding RC over all these years. Their quality control is second to none. I do not like worrying about all the dog food recalls we see coming across the headlines on an almost daily basis.....there was just another raw frozen dog food this past week that has been recalled because of listeria contamination. It is really important to me that I can trust the safety of what I put on my pet's table every day! RC provides this to me....and I can see over all the years that I have fed it, the health and vitality of my dogs. There are a lot of breeders that rely on the results they can expect from RC.....they certainly do not feed it because it is cheap! It is trustworthy, safe, and it works! |
The breeder I got my puppy from also recommended Royal Canin. My puppy seems to love it. |
I feed my girls Wellness (mostly from the Core line) and she's done fabulous. In a nutshell, each dogs has individual tastes and needs. What I'd do is figure which ones to start off on and see how they do on it. Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor is a good place to do some comparison. |
What are you feeding now? Unless its a bad company if there doing well on it I would not worry about it. There are a few company's I would stay away from like Purina, Blue Buffalo, Merrick and Nutro. I wouldn't really bother with the sites that rate the foods either, one of the bigger ones is run by a dentist not a dog nutritionist and some of the foods that use actual science and that vets and vet nutritionist recommend he rates low while some of the company's that have scary history's are rated high. Some of my personal favorite are Royal Canin, Wellness, Now and Acana. My yorkie has allergies and IBD so she is on Royal Canin prescription food. |
I feed pre-made raw - either Primal or Natures Variety. |
Fromm is a great brand (family owned since 1904 if i remember correctly) very high quality and never had a recall, has good ingredients and reasonably priced. |
Purina puppy chow leaves my puppy (literally) with the most awesome stools. And my Yorkie likes it. Its all I've ever used on my pre one year old dogs, and I've never had a problem. |

agreed ^ i wouldn't feed Purina even if i could get it for free. |
Our senior dogs are on iams and our cats. Our cassie, whom we lost a couple of years ago at the age of 13, was also on iams her whole life. It's what we have fed our animals for the last 15 years and they have always done very very well on it. Winnie was not able to have iams because she has had some tummy issues since we brought her home. She was on Blue Buffalo from wean and we continued that. Through a lot of trial and error and months worth of time we finally found that natures variety prairie puppy us what agreed with her. She's doing great on it. There are tons of different opinions on food....but the best thing to do is find what works with your dog and your budget. If what she is on now is working and is not a poor food then I would stick with it. Food changes need to be done gradually if you do choose to change. |
