Ear Cleaning question Found this video on YouTube but really made me think if it's the right way to clean a yorkie's ears since it's a well known fact that using Q-tips on human ears is dangerous, so don't know how safe it'd be for dogs. |
I was always told not to use Qtips. The pup wiggling or trying to jerk away can easily cause damage if it accidently gets jammed into is ear. I wouldn't want to take the risk. |
There is a YT member who had a q-tip break off in her dog's ear and she had to have an emergency vet remove it. As Kreuer indicated, a qtip inserted into the ear canal can also cause harm. Completely unnecessary. I clean the outer ear with a cotton ball, then use a flea comb to remove any wax on the hair near the canal. This also removes loose hair and keeps it from growing too thick. Occasionally I use a liquid cleaner and follow the instructions on the bottle. |
I use q-tips to clean the inside, outside part of the ear, where those crevices are... My vet said to be very careful when using q-tips to clean the inside canal of the dog's ears bc it's L shaped. So the q-tip should be angled straight & do not bend it. http://www.peteducation.com/images/articles/ear.gif So it's best to squeeze some ear cleaner in there, massage it & let them shake all the gunk off. Then wipe away w/a cotton ball. Googled & found this: BambooStick Dog Ear Cleaners | Large Cotton Buds For Dogs Ears Not sure if those are safe! |
