Harness question Hello, I am new to owning yorkies and I pick my girls up in a few weeks so I am wondering if anyone has found a harness to fit a young pup. I found some xxsmall harnesses but didn't know if they will fit. I do plan to measure them both when I go visit tomorrow but I know they will grow before I pick them up. So my question is what size fit if any for your baby yorkies? Under 2#, I want to be able to buckle them in their seat for the ride home it will be 1hr 35min. Thanks everyone. :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
Welcome and congrats on the new babies. A lot of people have gotten ferret harnesses for the teeny pups and say they fit well. It is smart to buckle them in whenever in the car, & I recommend getting a car seat of some type. Mine loves his basket-type seat. I had a snoozer-type, but it was very shallow & he acted scared to move. There are many on the market, so just look around. Looking forward to pics when you pick up the girls! |
I think Petsmart has this line for super small pups, I think that's where I got my first harness. I now use Buddy Belts for all mine. |
I bought an XS harnass at Petsmart before bringing my little guy home. It turned out to be too big. I returned to Petsmart and asked a clerk if there was something smaller. She took me to the small animal section of the store and showed me a ferret/bunny/guinea pig harness: Kaytee brand "Comfort Harness" size med. I did buy it for $10, but after found it very cheaply made, I think it is something to just get my Jack get used to having something on. The little D-ring on the back broke off on the first time he wore it. I only hooked a leash on it for him to get used to just having it dragging around the house. Jack played and pulled on the leash and broke off the D-ring. He is 2lbs and 11 weeks old. So be careful with those!! Again, I think at this age it is just the idea of having something on. This particular harnass would provide absolutely no protection to hold him in a car if I were to hit the brakes hard. I put him in a soft side tote bag style carrier in the car which I feed the seatbelt through the handles of and I can pet him through the open section facing the driver seat. This has worked out well around town and on a 4 hr. round trip last week. I am thinking of trying a buddy belt, but don't want to buy it until he is closer to his full size just due to the expense. Good Luck! |
Thank you everyone!! You guys always give awesome advice. I did some research last night and found some patterns for making harnesses, I have to pick a couple of things from the store and I'm going to start on them tonight. I have a lot of material left from making my daughter a leopard Sherpa lined jacket and was g |

Good Luck on yours!! |
I have bought several harnesses. hands down, the best one was a custom made made crocheted by a lady on etsy. how big are your girls now? Mine was 2.2 when I brought her home at 16 weeks. |
Walmart also has a toy size harness. . You can check petSmart in the cat section too. They are making kitten sized |
Your puppy is going to outgrow a vest harness pretty quickly, if the fabric is special to you I'd use another fabric for now. An xsmall step in harness was the first harness Lola had, it was too big when I bought it, I don't remember when it started fitting but I don't think it really works for dogs under 4lbs, at 7lbs it still fits her. Petco has a line called |
I did have a buddy belt as a small puppy but she grew out of it . Her puppy harness came from petsmart . |
