Pure? sorry I'm new to being a yorkie mommy. I've had my little stinker since than giving 2014 and a few comments have been bothering me. The vet told me he is 8.8 lbs and yorkies don't get over 5. Also my friend told me his fur is too curly. I've met his mommy (the dad wasn't in the room very long) and they convinced me they were both pure...how do I know for sure? |
Hi and Welcome! Unless they are AKC registered there really is no way to tell. The DNA tests are not 100% and I have heard them come back with some crazy breeds a dog was. There are many yorkies here that a pure and bigger then 5 pounds some even up to 20 pounds. The standard says not to exceed 7 pounds but that's for showing and not all dogs are born show dogs. Not sure I would stay with that vet but that's just my opinion. Sure would love to see a picture of him he sounds cute! |
I'd love to share pics if I knew how lol explain please? :) |
Hi, sorry you are doubting your baby's heritage. They do get bigger than 5 lbs...breeders try to meet their Standard of "less than 7 lbs." but some inherit larger sizes from generations past. I think the Standard also mentions hair without curl but if you look at old champions' pix, you will see many had considerable curl in their hair, and were gorgeous purebred dogs. If, when you post, you look above the window where you type, you will see a paperclip to use for attachments. The pix do need to be within a certain size range, but you can resize them, if needed. It would be great to see pix of your little darling...:D |
Welcome to YT....My little 3 y/o boy weighs in at 12 lbs, my last 4 AKC girls all now passed weights were 10 lbs, 2 were 13 lbs and my last beautiful girl topped the scales at 17 beautiful lbs. All had straight hair, one little girl had wavy hair, my adopted boy also has wavy hair, I keep him in a puppy cut. IMO your vet doesn't sound like they are very familiar with the yorkie breed. Standard weight to show is 5 to 7 lbs, as another member stated, some litters will throw larger pups due to past generations of the male or female. Did you get AKC papers with your baby. |
As others have noted, Yorkies often weigh more than 5 pounds. Our Bella weighs 7 pounds. The DNA testing is about 96% accurate, which means only 4% chance of crazy results. If those odds sound good to you, and you have the $79.99 for it, I'd recommend the Wisdom Panel test, just to give yourself some peace of mind: Wisdom Panel® 2.0 | Wisdom Panel |
I would get a new vet. What an idiot! |
We had a lady post a thread who's full blood Yorkie is 25lbs and healthy for his size. So I'd get a new vet if I was you. |
He didn't come with papers the breeder said she quit doing that a few litters ago but she showed me all 6 of her dogs and mine was the only curly the rest were straight or wavy :) thank you all! |
